Default Well bought, screamin deal or ?

From Flea-Bay, described as one owner 91 GT with AT and 32k miles - winning bid $14.8 K.

Well, it is an S4, not a GT. I saw a few obvious flaws (that should have been fixed) so not sure how well it was really treated.

Good car for a driver if one likes automatics at 1/2 the price of a GTS with those miles. Put 100,000 more miles on it and sell it for $7,500 or so ...

DOH!

I guess I would rather make a fool out of myself on post #1 than on post #1000

Based on my lurking to date, it seems that nicely kept 89-91 GT would go for 15k and up, with a 5 speed being more expensive than the AT.

A couple of us were watching this car right up until the end. The car appeared to be pretty nice, had a few flaws that were obvious from the pictures. The guy came across as a rather not nice person, on his reply's to questions and e-mails. I figured the car would go for a bit more than it did and was surprised at the $14.8k price.

BTW, ALL 5spd 90/91 cars are GT, autos are S4... Yes good GT 928's from '90/'91 go for more than $15k normally. S4's in equal condition about $3k less or so I would say...I would hope they ALL go for more, but alas they do not.

The '89 MY is a tricky one because there were 50-75 (maybe more?) US '89 GT 5spd (only) cars and then a mix of S4 cars in both Auto AND 5spd...many internal differences other than the tranny between the 5spd S4 and the GT though.

The spread for an auto vs 5 speed is probably more than $3,000. What makes "collectible has ALWAYS been high performance. A 67 pontiac Lemons vs a GTO , a 4 speed 67 Mustang vs automatic, sports cars generally are NOT automatics.. The other BIG issue is convertible vs hardtop and God forbid it has 4 doors
and yes I once sold a sportomatic 911 to a guy...who only had one leg as a result of a motorcycle accident.

I know a guy from TX like that, but I hear he repairs a lot of 928's, go figure.

GTs seem to be selling for $5k to $10K more than same year S4s.

Looks ok to me. In case you don't know about it, have the timing belt and water pump service verified right away. Also, do a search for thrust bearing failure or TBF and insure your car is checked for that too.

I like your username.

Ah! Didn't get it at first. A Star Trek reference?

Not a screamin' deal, but you didn't get screwed without lube. IMO it's an ever-so-slightly high price for an auto without a PPI.

Like others I spotted a couple of things, but otherwise it looks ok. The low miles is good, that indicates fewer opportunities to screw things up. But, it also means that as soon as you starting driving it it's going to start leaking; like every other ~20-year old car, if it hasn't had its "20-year schedule maintenance" then it is due. IMO there's a probability this one hasn't been touched except for oil changes.

I bet two of the following three are true: factory-original timing belt, factory-fill gear oil, the PSD has never, ever, been flushed.

I'm not saying your a Ha'DIbaH, just that you've got some work ahead.

What I found interesting about this car was that it was a fairly early production # (158), so probably arrived at the dealer in late '90, or very early '91. It was first registered with a bit over 300 miles in March '93. Essentially sat on the dealers showroom/lot for 2+ years!!!!
