TYRES

I've rung all 5 half-interested tyre joints here in Oz for my 16 x 7/16 x 9 rims.

they all say 225 fronts, with a limit of 245 rears, and they're NOT refering to what will fit under the car.
I didn't know the difference betwwe 2 inches (7>9) was 20 millimeters??
Are they just too lazy to get anything decent in???
That's about the best you'll do on 16" rubber. The standard wheels you see on my 82 are 16 x 7 all around and I was going to put S4 rims on in the same style (16 x7 front and 16 x 8 rear) with the tyres you've found are available (and sometimes the 245 rears are hard to get).
The best option for decent tyre choice is to ditch the 16's like I now have on the 82, and go for 17's (or 18's)

Where in Melbourne are you?

Mark,

Welcome to RL.

For your tyres try the following as Ken and Alan know 928s and they can do wheel alignment without lifting the car, a must for a 928s.

Ken Long Tyre Specialists Pty Ltd
Tyres--Retail - West Melbourne, VIC
138 Stanley St, West Melbourne VIC 3003, Australia
(03) 9329 6595

I just recommend Ken to another 928 owne,r who is on www.landsharkoz.com and he was very happy with service and tyres he obtained.

OK.....today's progress.

1st - Ken Long is an absolute legend, but the biggest 16s he could find in the whole freakin country were 245s........I might be looking for 17inch wheels & tyres instead???

I'm about to pickup gas struts to hold the bonnet & hatch open, instead of the current cricket bat.

I've found an Innovate A/F probe & gauge combo that I can pick up locally tomorrow night....Yee Haa!!!!

A 245 works just fine on a 9 inch rim.....plenty of traction as well. Big tires are somewhat overrated.

Mark, welcome to Rennlist.

245/45/16 are the widest tyre you will find that goes onto a 16" rim.

The good news is, thats also the rubber size the factory fitted to the 9" wide 16" rims on the Clubsport, 928 SE, and '89 GT, so its the size you're looking for.

Whilst it may seem that if 245 is the correct width on the stock S4 8" wide rears, there's no gain using the same rubber on 9" wide rims, the extra width actually reduces sidewall flex, and thus tightens up handling a bit.

Either way, your options at this stage are use the 245 rear tyres on the 993 rims you have, or buy some new rims and new tyres in a larger size.

If you start looking for new rims, you want at least a 9" rear like the later 928's had in 17" with stock 255 wide rubber. Also be prepared to learn about front offsets to make sure that whatever you spend your money on actually fits.

Thanks Guys!

I did see the Offset thing on one of the Aussie sites (can't find it now though)

Current front 16 x 7 is ET 50 (right enough - ET 60 perfect)
Current rear 16 x 9 is ET70 (will probably need spacers as close to 20 ml as possible to achieve "ET50")

Mark .. send me a PM (click on my user name and you'll get that option) with your private email address, and I'll send you a few articles on tyres and wheels. I used to live in Melbourne (in Oakleigh once), so I can steer you towards places you might have some success with getting Porsche bits.

Just noticed I'm getting close to post #928 ...

Mark, Welcome!

You sound like an immediate 928 enthusiast, sort of like love at first sight. All of your questions and thoughts appear really bright. There is a lot of information on this forum. I can give you some input on some of it but the other guys are doing great that.

Be careful about the 4 struts. The ones for the hatch are different from the hood even though they are the same dimensions. The rear ones need to hold much more weight. When the rears become too weak to hold the hatch, put them on the front and get new ones for the rear. In fact you may want to just do that now and save some money, if they are not totally gone.

We have some other great listers in your part of the world on here, so maybe you can hook up with some of them.

Again, Welcome. It is going to be nice to have you with us.

Thanks Jerry!

I looked for struts on local ebay, but as usual, I refused to buy without person contact.

When Leigh called, he immediately asked, " Is it the original alloy bonnet, or a steel replacement?" and "Which wing do you have on the hatch?" and I knew I had the right guy!!!!!

And yes, the fronts & rears are different, and it was AUD$80 for all 4!

We are busy under the hood & under the hatch with the battery while trying to get it to run OK, and stuffing around & reaching around a cricket bat holding the bonnet up is just too dumb!

Mark,
If you are not already in Landsharkoz, please join. There are a couple of regular get togethers there - dinner in town one Tuesday a month, and another gorup of us have some ad hoc Sunday coffee meetings in the NE area.
Re CIS, once its in a good working state, you wont need a permanently fitted pressure gauge, just a gauge set handy for when it plays up - which can mostly be prevented by regular use. Mine is mostly a garage queen, once a week use at best, but the CIS has not missed a beat in years now.
An A/F gauge will require an O2 sensor, which was not common on these cars, as there is no way to use the output to modify mixture, except with CIS-E, which i have never seen on a 928.

Mark, I will be very surprised to learn that the rear hatch was ever made of auminum. I am prettty sure that they are all steel. I think the design object was to shift the weight to the rear to get a near equal weight distribution, and putting a light weight hatch would not contribute to that goal.

The only things aluminum, and I am pretty sure it is common to all the cars, are the hood, the front fenders and the door. That is not counting much of the inner bumper bars and the undercarriage, engine and some drive train items.

If I am right, it may be that you have not in fact found the right guy. Sounds to me like he is making it up as he goes or operating on mere rumors or scuttlebut. Be careful about what kind of information he is feeding you.

Good luck with your car; and stay tuned with this fourm.

Mark, I am also concerned about the comment about the O2 sensor. I will also be surprised to learn that any of these cars did not have an O2 sensor. Check on that also.

Jerry,
My 83 Euro CIS has NO O2 sensor!!!! Only the USA models would have these, on L-Jet AFAIK.

Thanks, jp. That is the kind of information that surprises me, from time to time. I am a long way from knowing everything about these cars. But I am cautious about information that is contrary to my limited knowledge. Like the rear hatch--I'll also be surprised about any of them being aluminum.
