Default Do I need a new clutch?

Hi,

Suddenly yesterday I lost my clutch! The pedal feels very sloppy, very soft, it does not stay on the floor and it was progressively more difficult to change gears without some grinding,
The oil level in the reservoir stays exactly the same, so I assume it’s not a fluid leak.
What do you think? Do I need a new clutch kit or is it possible to be another thing?

TIA for your opinions and help.

Regards

If the clutch wears out the symptom is slipping, not grinding. Can you give more detail about what the pedal is doing? Two things that happened to me where the clutch stopped disengaging without a leak:
-The throw out bearing is held to the pressure plate via a clip. The clip failed.
-The clutch master has a return spring in it. The spring broke.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer Karl.
Let me see if I can explain me better, sorry about that!
The pedal is very soft, doesn’t offer any resistance BUT it comes back to the original position, doesn’t stay on the floor. What I mean by grinding is when I try to put the car in gear, no matter is reverse, first, second, etc, it’s difficult and makes that grinding noise. After it is engaged it doesn’t slip, I tried to fully accelerate in 3º, 4º and 5º gears from a low rpm and all the power is there, it’s not slipping.

To have a sudden change like that it sounds like a something let go associated with the release mechanism, which means the clutch isn't fully disengaging because of whatever broke/failed. Could be a totally failed release bearing, broken pressure plate fingers or a hydraulic problem.

One thing's certain ... you'll need to have a look at the hydraulics and take off the lower bell housing cover and see what's going on. Post some pics of what you find.

Hi,

First of all, thanks for the answers
Well, since it has to go to the shop because I don’t have the conditions (and the knowledge…) to do certain jobs in my garage, I think that, independently of what is found, it’s time for a new clutch kit and a check of all clutch system parts and replacement of what is needed!
Our cars are so nice, strong and pleasant that, at least in my case, I keep forgetting it’s a 30-year-old car and it needs some TLC, more often then I remember to give him!

Regards

Good plan ... let us know what your mechanic finds.
