Default 86 928 Opinon Needed...Please Share

Okay forum, I have an opprotunity to pick up a 86 928 for 1500.00

I have no history on the car, from what I was told the car last ran 2 years ago. What do I do? I can buy the car for $1500.00 as is. I drove 2 hours in my old 82 928 to go inspect the car.

Here are some the pictures I took. I am trusting you guys to share with me what would you do...

I put a battery to it to see if the engine would turn and it did...I did not try to start it but I wanted to see if it would turn. There is no history on this car. So I am on the fence on this one. Worst case the engine transmission is trashed maybe I can salvage the car for parts and get my money back that way. You thoughts forum?

You really need to ask yourself why you are interested in this car. I suspect it is because it kind of appears to you that it is a bargain. It is not a bargain. If they gave you this car it is not a bargain. If you are just interested in parting it out I don't think the partrs of a worn out S3 are worth the effort in taking it apart, selling then shipping all of it somewhere and then having the tub or whatever else is left to deal with, and you are going to be reluctant to send that off to the crusher.

On the other hand, if you are a real sucker for punishment, like most of us here seem to be sometimes, and want a project car to bring back to life, this might be an ok candidate. However, that is only if you have a real desire for an S3. Otherwise I would suggest you look for a similar starting car for your project such as an S4 or a very early OB.

My opinion is that you should pass on this car.

Why am I interested? I would think 86 5.0 32V 928 is a bargain for 1500.00. My 82 928 has been a AWESOME and I paid 3k for her.

I would hope to clean her up, drop the tank, and swap out the fuel filter and try to start her up. I had read stories here and on tube with 928's fireing right up after a long nap.

I would hope this holds true for this one?

So far your thoughts is pass this up....

$300 or so max.
Its a higher-mile mess.

I agree with you on the year choice, though, 83/84/5/6 in Euro or USA trim is a great way to go.

Good paint ?

Good interior?

Good drive train?

For restoration candidates, if a car doesn't have at least one of these three I pass no matter what the price.

If you wanted this car for a particular part (engine,trans..) then I would offer 500 bucks for the whole car.

It is a respray and the pictures don't show the real condition. Plus they are at night. My guess is that if you went back and took your time to get a good close look, you'd find a lot of cosmetic issues. But cosmetics can mostly be treated fairly easily.

More worrisome is the engine and the trans. If there's something screwed up there, it might cost you a lot of money. The engine looks fairly unmolested, but no telling how it is inside. The yellow cam covers plus missing bolt aren't encouraging. So at least get a good PPI on the mechanics before you buy.

Trophy trash. Can't even liberate that one on the premise of being an eyesore to the neighbors. Probably a status symbol for them, actually. Seen it a hundred times.

Run.
