My guess is that Porsche continued to use a conceptually-similar design (switches on the doors, hood, trunk, momentary ground to the lock motors, etc.) in the 993/996 systems.
Tom, please do not take this the wrong way, but I had a pretty long list of things to upgrade my 928 before I read your post yesterday, and after a day of deep thoughts on this, I think I do not like you much for adding this one to my list.

(that was a REALLY good idea, I hope Alan thinks so also and does this first)

If you go the 993 route, I'd advise you not to use the immobilizer option. There are too many stories (one first-hand) where the alarm would not allow the car to start until the power was cycled via battery disconnection.

I have Toad606 in my S4, not a problem with it in the one year I have had the car; works so well that I never used the keys to open the car, so I only found out recently the drivers door lock can't be open with the key.
I like the Clifford system Brett mentiones and it's at the very end of my things to do.

$54 and qualifies for Prime shipping from Amazon. My S4's alarm system is by Avital, and I'm happy with that one, so I'll let you all know how this works out.
That should work fine. Even if it had alarm function, just don't hook it up. I've had my Audiovox APS-45 installed for years just for remote lock/unlock of doors and hatch. Works great. Others have used Viper, KE, etc. They are all quite similar in function and installation. Here's a thread where wiring is dicussed. Alan provided several wiring options. See post 46 for my final wiring idea for GTS, approved by Alan.

Guys - I have indeed been all over this - many years ago... Still works fine today...

I too was amazed Porsche never got around to keyless entry on their luxury flagship product in the 90's

I'd not remove the factory alarm on a GTS if its working fine - and most are. It is actualy a quite superior alarm system and adding a Keyless Entry to it supplementally is quite easy.

I have lock/arm + unlock/disarm, hatch release & panic. This configurations supports the auto windows close on lock feature, double click doors + hatch open.

Unlocking automatically turns on the dome lights and locking automatically turns them off, the hatch alarm suspend feature works as with the key.

All features can be operated interchangably with the remote or the keys...

Key head remotes might be nice but to me its a trivial issue - standard fob remotes work well and have longer battery life and usually longer range (mine works from up to 100' away).

I use a Commando KE55 - no longer made - but similar newer models are available. You can glue a Porsche crest/logo on if it makes you feel better...

Alarms are one of my nightmare owners areas.

US 83 currently has some model of Audiovox, installed by a top local shop with experience on 928's, fixed by a good auto electrician to use the diode circuit to work with factory alarm, and still not really useable due to extreme sensitivity to motion and likely poor door switches. Alarm also went off as battery voltage dropped if parked very long without a charger.

If alarms have improved and not just gotten cheaper and worse, maybe its time for the annual alarm thread?

My GTS alarm works fine and I'm just looking to add the functions you have.

Did you wire that as per the GTS wiring diagram posted/linked to in Bills post? What Commando model would the KE55 equate to now?

Yes the original GTS diagram is how mine is wired...

Looks like their KE 40 is a similar current model

Just don't hook up or enable the Audiovox alarm. The wiring linked diagrams show hooking it up to the door locks and lights but nothing else. This provides keyless entry, etc., and arms and disarms the stock alarm as needed and obviates all the hassles of aftermarket alarms.

I just went with a Prestige System... doors, alarm, rear trunk pop (which I have to work the electronic latch first) and remote start.

Only had it a couple months, but very happy with it. I guess I should have done the windows and sunroof as well (I could have) just did not think much about it... about $300 total

Mine is a US 83 with factory alarm, so I'm not sure what is/isn't different from a GTS. and after two uninstallers and two installers the exact wiring may remain a mystery, but I intend to take another whack it fixing it soon. Thanks for the tip on not enabling the Audiovox alarm.

My Avital package just arrived. Didn't realize it when bought but it's made by DEI which is the same folks that Hans/Paul used to integrate the DEI 530/529 modules to enable to the touch LED illuminated switches. Wiring looks the same and was supplied with what looks like the 529.

Question to Hans or Alan...can I modify and integrate with the supplied window setup (and not hack this up for next owner ).

System supplied (Avital 2300):

GTS is much different in terms of location of the alrm boxes, etc. The early wiring diagrams baffle me.
