Don't like the RMB and think I should remove it
Hi folks,
The new-to-me GTS came with an RMB and the original muffler. The RMB actually does sound kind of cool (though loud-ish) at idle and low RPM's, but it's a pretty annoying drone at cruising speeds.
Currently I am planning to reinstall the stock muffler. Other than the weights saved by the RMB, is there any reason I should reconsider this plan? Is there any power to be gained by removing the rear muffler, or is it just a sound and weight thing?
Thanks,
Paul

The RMB has been documented to increase HP by a few.
Not enough to warrant installation for HP gains alone.
Swap out the RMB for the original muffler.
It's a 20 minute job.
If you don't like how quiet it is, simply switch it back.
I've got a stainless dual-tip RMB on my GTS and won't go back to stock.

A compromise was demonstrated by Porken where he dis-em bowels the pumpkin.

Paul,
If you prefer the original over the RMB after you switch them out and if the RMB is in good shape, I'll take it off your hands if you want to sell it fairly cheap. It will give me a spare or more than likely I'll pull the one off my '92 GTS and put the better one on and the repaint the one that comes off and move it over to the '88 and then check and repaint that one and keep it for later...or to put on another car...

For '78-'86.5.
AFAIK, S4-up have a straight through muffler (resonator) which should not restrict flow at all.
The best way to reduce exhaust volume is with internal volume. The pumpkin is huge. It makes a great noise reducer when properly modified for flow. (Unfortunately the pumkin inlet pipes are smaller than the '86.5-up dual pipes, but it doesn't seem to make much difference in flow at stockish power levels.)

I did this last year. On longer cruises the drone was too annoying. I'm happy with the stock muffler sound. Only thing I ran into, the stock muffler came close to rubbing the rear wheel. If you have anything wider than 285's on there it might touch.

Forgot to mention that I also have an X-pipe and high-flow cats, so that may be an aggravating factor, sound-wise, with the RMB.

Right, then there should be no problem. The original muffler pretty heavy and will hang down a bit more from the installed position. Take this into account and hang the rear a bit higher than the desired height.
