When using an "early" lower cover, are you refering to an '83/'84 MY?
"early" = 78-82. 928 116 411 12. Starting in '83 they went to 928 116 412 01, to which the starter does not mount directly, but rather just has an opening so the starter can bolt to the mounting bracket on the block.


Here's the config of the IMI starter on my stroker, the lug points straight down. I recall Greg having to re-clock it out of the box, but don't recall having to do any grinding on the starter itself.

The snout on the other one they sent didn't need that but the new one did.
I've also used the cheap Ebay starter and they mount with the body poking outward like yours and the lug at the top. Every mini starter installation is a new experience. To me the holy grail was to have the body towards the center and lug not touching the pan so I'm finally happy.

Did you have to modify your early lower cover to clear the 60-2 teeth? I suspect the mine was always on the verge of rubbing even though I thought it cleared so I did some milling on this one to be sure of clearance.

With the lightweight starters if it is grinding you will find that it is probably supplied with a 9 tooth pinion , I found this out the hard way after destroying 2 flywheels and being told by the supplier that they have supplied hundreds and didnt know what was wrong .
Found out that by changing to the 10 tooth the problem was fixed , never ceased to amazed at the ignorance that exists some suppliers , and of course to fix their problem cost me 2 flywheels .

IIRC Greg did some clearancing on the bellhousing cover during assembly, and then it did a little more milling all by itself the first time the car started up. It's tight in there! Another couple of kisses and it's all good now.

I have two Ebay starters, both unused, except for when I tried to put them on one of the early cars - both would never engage.

'78 to'82 MY flywheels are different,I've found out. Local auto dismantler has 928s. Can get flywheel cheep. Is there a mini-starter supplier/brand to avoid?

Man that starter is way to close , given that the winding insulation is probably only good to 90 degrees c , those headers at WOT for any period will be glowing red , would love to get a picture of my headers glowing , will be hot enough to melt plastic around them , in my case I have melted the lid of the washer botlle in the engine bay .
ALl that heat will then be in the starter, not good for a long life .
ROger where you at some point modifying your own version some time ago ?

The headers are coated with a ceramic thermal barrier coating, and they're stainless, so they cool pretty quick. That said, the car does crank a bit when warm, I'm sure I'm cooking the hell out of that starter.....

Your headers are a little unsual.. glowing would be interesting to see

Can't you stick an HD webcam on the ground under your dyno?

Yes and mine is too close too , but not as close as just been pictured .

I have a new camera so with the next build this is on the list, I will also record the sound as this system howls like a 12 cylinder when it is at full noise , as it is a 180 degree swept system built locally , by a very skilled exhaust fabricator .

I had lots of clearance issues with the mini starter on the Estate.....it used to hang down WAY too far.....then after lots of grinding-fitting we finally got it to mount up like it should.......
