Default Mini Starter lug position mod

I just moved the battery lug on my IMI starter so that it's not touching the oil pan. If you ever mounted one of these you might like this.
The lug winds up nearly touching even after being sawed as short as possible.

You can see where the old position was by the epoxied plate.

I use an early one piece lower bellhousing so there's no bracket. The top bolt is fine to access but there are some things to modify to be able to use the part with a later crankshaft sensor wheel.
You can see how close it is in the pic, I had to machine the starter snout a little and machine the inside of the bellhousing too.

Very Clever Mike! I had the same issue on the Hanson car with the lug hitting the pan.I ended up cutting the stud down and using a piece of .125 flat stock bolted to it and extend the mount point towards header and down. The starter is now dead as there were drive mesh issues and am in the market for a new one and will do this instead.
Which intermediate plate do you use with your clutch set up,and what year starter did you order? Thanks for sharing. Ed

Drive mesh issues? What does that mean?
I ordered a starter from 928Intl' because I didn't want to worry about it. It looks like IMI sent them the wrong one and I had my engine turning backwards. There was another thread about that and my conclusions are that aftermarket starter companies are incompetent and untrustworthy, not just IMI either. It doesn't surprise me that they couldn't be bothered to put the battery lug in the correct place. They have a hard enough time cleaning off the glue fom where they peel off a sticker and place their own. Putting a part number on the starter is also too much effort.

For a clutch I use a 7.25 Tilton and my own flywheel.

Drive mesh issue is the starter drive gear being chewed up by the ring gear and was making a horrible grinding noise. It was doing it the whole time I've had the car and finally got to the point of just grinding and not turning over the engine.I pulled out the mini starter and bolted in a used starter from my 85 and the car started fine.no grinding and it even spins faster. Even after a hot soak,a used stock starter worked better than the mini.Since this car has the dual disc clutch,I figured that maybe the starter was for an S4 and that was why it was grinding.I haven't totally went through it to solve the problem,I'm just trying to get it to start regularly so I can get to the dyno!

I bet they installed an incorrect gear. That's happened to me before. In my case it was such a different pitch that it wouldn't engage at all and I was only out several hours of my life.

That's fine as long as you don't have headers.

Just about to install one of these when it comes on Monday and was wondering about the clearance for the lug.

Much appreciated post.

Did you have to modify the nose to get clearance for the timing ring?

If you did, maybe you could post a picture of the nose mod?

I did have to modify this nose cone for timing ring clearance but didn't have to on others.
It would be a good idea to modelling-clay your starter to see how close it is. I measured the timing teeth at .35 from the mounting surface and .35 from the hole edge.

Hand grinding is unreliable so I milled anything that needed more clearance.

Most excellent picture.

I will forward it to my machinist buddy, if I need to do the modification.

I take it that moving the lug is just that and that the "box" it sits in, is just a cover.

Can't wait till Monday.

In the final stages of my major Spring project, which includes replacing the old L-Jet with an Electromotive system to go along with my engine mods.

7-10 days till first start.

Thanks again for the picture.

In theory it's a matter of drilling a new hole and moving the lug. In reality it's more involved. A "drill" would not be precise enough. The hole must be closely positioned in relation to the opposite side's lug and it needs to be a zero clearance fit otherwise it would be unreliable in the future. I used a CNC mill for the new hole and also added a spot hole for the plastic part.

The internal side also needs to be modified. When the cover is off it starts to make sense.

I tried one of these on my '81. Ring gear and starter gear never contacted each other. When using an "early" lower cover, are you refering to an '83/'84 MY?

Did you get the power harnes with the EMC kit. I didnt and had to change the way some things were connected. Thanks to a few of you on here it is running, running rough untill I can fine tune it some more, but it is drivable.
