I would look at the coil wire ends. I've seen a good amount of corrosion inside some coil wire ends. It's quite likely he is running on one coil, consistent with what Jim was saying. Amazingly, the car will putt along on 4 cylinders, and a new owner might not pick up on this. I once drove for several miles, noticing that the car was running oddly but did not put 2+2 together for quite a while until I realized what was going on. Anyway, it's probably an ignition issue with one coil. There are other things that can cause this, like a bad coil, power wire to coil coming off or failure of the final stage electronics, but a corroded coil wire end is highest on the list. 89+ cars have a monitoring system that shuts off the fuel in event of an ignition issue like this.

John, dprantl, et al - re: momentary after fire during shifting, not constant flame. This happened with new and old TPS as well as with new and old injectors; and digital dash shows 0.0 liters/100km when coasting at speed in gear with throttle off, so I think the TPS is OK.

And the winners are James Bailey and Bill Ball
. The mechanic found the power wire to the coil in place but not connected properly. He went on to tell me that he's getting help with the ruined cats to allow him to drive the rest of the way to Spokane. Thanks again.

Interesting......the 928 Estate does "flame" on hard decel...but thats due to no cats and a disconnected idle switch (L jet)...makes for pretty cool video from cars behind.....

I remember one of my uncles had a 58 Olds back in the early 60's. He had a spark plug in each tailpipe connected to a switch. It was pretty impressive at night. I never did care for the Hollywood Wolf Horn he got from JCWhitney.
