Well, thinking I might have if..................

I can get a clear title. Navigating the CA DMV and it is going to take a bit of back and forth paperwork to get it done.

I will give full details once I get the title and can truly celebrate.

^ I will be headed to Cali in late September. I could drive it back if you need, if we can get it to run.^

And there is a SLIGHT chance I might be driving back in my Suburban, towing a flatbed trailer that would hold that car.

If there is anything I can do locally to help you at the DMV, please let me know. I have zero pull there and wait in line with all of my other Cali Comrades (actually, I use AAA) , but am happy to help if I can.

Note that you ALWAYS want the title in the name of who ever is "selling" you the car so he can sign it in front of you and you confirm his drivers license name and #, many Craigs list cars are being "flipped" by unlicensed dealers who are avoiding paying the registration and transfer fees. They are "selling it for a friend" , for their "father-in-law" , etc. Then when any issues come up (like it will not pass smog) they are long gone and never appear on the documents.
Jim,

I think DMV rules have changed some. Yes back fees are due if the car has not been registered for a couple of years. However, if the car has fallen out of the computer then the DMV starts over from scratch. I have done this on a couple of cars and a motor cycle. The VIN needs to be verified and smog.

One other note - EPA and DOT requirements are waived when a car is more than 25 years old. This means 1986 and older 928s can come in the country with no Federalization. Kind of a loop hold for classic car collectors. But it does open up some possibilities. The 80 to 86 S cars are still desirable.

7 years IIRC. I did the same, started from scratch with an old GT6 that sat for years.

Alex,
I bought a car in Austin with a BIll of Sale that had never been titled in Texas, but was last titled in Cali. I got a bonded title for 2 years and now can get a clean title. Before you work on it and get it running, get it appraised so you won't have to pay the taxes based on the value out of the DMV's little black book. I had paid next to nothing and the DMV wanted to charge me taxes on a $12,000 car. I said no way. In Texas, a car dealer can appraise it or you can have an insurance appraiser do it. I had a car dealer do mine and they did not charge me, asked me what it was worth and we settled on a figure that I thought was fair. Then I went to get a surety bond for about $250, and then went to get the title. Pretty easy in the grand scheme of things.

Good Luck.

Well I figured I would finally update this thread. I apologize for the delay, but things have been very busy and this project has been neglected as a result. I am writing this to motivate myself to make time and get this baby on the road.

First off - I am thinking I did "win the lottery" on this buy. As stated the car only has about 160K original KM on it (100K miles). It is obvious the car was well cared for by the original PO. it appears during the time it sat someone did do some interior damage (drivers door panel) trying to fix speaker and aftermarket steering wheel not installed properly. Front seats have some wear damage, but overall the interior is in very good shape.*

Exterior - car was not originally black, but metallic blue. I wish they had not changed that. Spoilers look stock although not available for this year so obviously PO added. They used the correct trim and everything though and looks factory installed. *Paint is needing respray and there are some minor dings.

Now - the reason this car was being sold so cheap....... Woman selling it said she was sure the engine was broke- bought it from a storage auction. I new since she didn't seem to have much mechanical knowledge that something must have been visibly wrong. I was expecting car to arrive with no engine or half the engine missing. When it arrived I visible soaked in the car for a while before getting the nerve to open the hood. I noticed many parts in the boot so I new it had been taken apart somewhat.*

Well - the drivers side cam is broke where the pulley attaches. OK - so that will be a pain, as getting another cam will not be cheap. So, I decide to take stock of the parts in the boot. I pull out all the parts I am expecting to see, and then I notice a box underneath all of the parts. I feel like I'm on an episode of storage wars as I slowly open the box.........and to my surprise...... a brand new cam, new plugs, gaskets, and bearings.*

So, now I am working to determine everything that needs to be done to this baby and make her roadworthy. I will update again once I make more progress.*

Nice update, nice box with new camq in it. Altogether, a project not for the faint of heart. Appears the car is in the right hands.
