Hi all,

I love my 87 to death. But I digress...

Up until this morning I've thought my rear wing doesn't fold. Well it doesn't. But I discovered this


It looks like a hinge, and I can see a spring in there. Are all wings like that, or do I really have the folding wing? It could be bolted down by a PO.



Did I mention I dig this car?

Thats a folding wing - the bolts are holding the lower half of the spring to the frame.

If you pull up on the rear edge of the wing it will hinge upwards - might take quite a pull (10-15kg of force), but thats how it should look.

What's your VIN number? I'm pretty sure that RoW 87's got the hinged rear wings much later than the US cars.

#841898 also had a folding wing (UK car). I like 'em - they make cleaning the back window so much easier

If it hasn't been lifted in a long time, it might take quite a tug the first time (my red '87 needed a lot of force to lift the very first time I tried on it - I'm guessing it hadn't been lifted in at least 10 years based on its history).

I recommend you reach under the wing and grap the front edge with both hands. Then simultainously pull up with you forearms and down with your hands to 'rotate the wing without over stressing the fasteners to the hatch.

I use it to lift the hatch up. It seems very solid. I suspect it has been bolted down by a PO, is that possible?

How does it normally work? can you still lift the rear hatch by it, or will it just fold?

I had to remove my wing from the car and pry the hinges after I bought my '87. I'm sure they hadn't been used in a LONG time.. Great find! Piston squirter block too then?

Probably just stuck for lack of use.
Kurt's advice is good to open the wing and prevent any damage to the hatch.
You should be able to lift the hatch without unhinging the wing.

Did you try an PB blaster or penetrating oil on the 'hinge' before trying to rotate it ?

It folded after some struggling.
