New product - SharkTuner Alpha
This weekend at SITM, Jim Corenman made the first public presentation of a new SharkTuner product. Many thanks to Dave and Jeannie for giving us the opportunity to debut it at their special gathering !
This product is the SharkTuner Alpha system. It eliminates the requirement to accommodate a MAF in the inlet path of the 928 engine. This gives great freedom in using alternative intake systems e.g. Individaul Throttle bodies (ITBs); custom runners etc.
Eliminating the MAF removes the major obstacle in using more radical cams in the 928 engine. The stock MAF will give completely erroneous readings when subjected to any reversion pulses from the intake due to more cam overlap. In the past this has forced tuners to use a much higher idle speed to mask the problem. Not very friendly with a 5 speed, but almost impossible with an Auto ‘box !
The system operates as an Alpha -N fuelling system. This uses a precision throttle position potentiometer giving a measurement of engine load, in combination with an air temperature sensor and atmospheric pressure sensor for airmass corrections.
It uses the original LH and EZK ECUs and engine wiring harness without modification. A new small "black box" interfaces between the throttle pot, air temperature sensor, idle/WOT switch harness and temp2 sensor. The atmospheric pressure sensor is built into the black box. Truly “plug and play”.
The system is designed to be mapped with the SharkTuner Mk 2 with PEMs fitted to the LH and EZK ECUs. Electronically adjustable idle and WOT switches are provided.
We have successfully applied this system to the 6.4 litre stroker race car pictured below. This car runs 50mm Jenvey individual throttle bodies with adaptors of our own design. The engine makes substantially more power than when it had the stock intake. It has run very well in the two races entered to date.
The SharkTuner Alpha system could also work well with positive displacement superchargers (twin screw).
For centrifugal supercharger and turbo engines where boost is not directly related to throttle opening, we will develop a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure or Speed-density) version of this product.
The car has also been running on Jim’s Corenman’s stock GT as a test mule. As a definitive test of the system, he drove the car from Washington State to North Carolina, encountering a full range of temperatures, altitudes (up to 8.500ft.) and all types of traffic conditions. The system performed exactly as a MAF based system would.
We expect to be able to take orders by the end of this June and deliver shortly after. The price of the “black box “ and updated ST2 software will be $450. Orders in the USA can be placed with Jim Corenman- http://siriuscyber.net/sharktuner/
The choice of throttle potentiometer is left to the customer. Depending on quality the prices can vary from $128 for the Bosch RP86 to about $160 USD for the much superior (contactless Hall effect) Penny and Giles D46288.

For this version with load measure with a Throttle pot, there's an atmospheric pressure sensor built into the box. I didn't name it as a "MAP sensor" so it wouldn't be confused with the external MAP sensor that will be used with the Speed-Density version that will become available later.

I'm in the process of writing the User Manual at present. The installation on a standard engine is very straightforward, and mostly shown by the pics I posted.
Basically remove stock TPS switch, fit throttle pot with adaptor, adjust TPS volts. Mount airtemp sensor in airfilter box Locate black box, feed cables through the grommet in firewall, pug in connectors for Temp 2, throttle pot, airtemp, simulated throttle switch and throttle pot. Plug in ST and tune ...
MAF can be left in place or replaced with a tube.

I too am interested in this as I was looking for an alternative EFI in the past. The Sharktuner just keeps getting better and better to the point where this will be my new way of tuning the EFI already on this car. Problem is just saving up the $$$ for it. Perhaps a Christmas present or next year's bonus.

Taking that 6inch long MAF out would make for some much needed room for many!
Hmmm...perhaps time for me to jump to that 4" intake and 104mm throttle Ive always wanted to try.

We don't supply a bypass pipe to replace the MAF as once people have the freedom to ditch the MAF they may want to try experimenting with the intake, as Tony is thinking. There is probably a standard size of aluminium or hard plastic tube that could be used for a MAF bypass.
Makes perfect sense to me. It's great to see both a perssure vs load feature blended into the signal going to the LH as opposed to a MAF. Since the MAF is voided in the Alpha setup, will there be some sort of pipe included as a substitute for the MAF?
