Rear suspension bolt, seized. Any advice

Guys, I think that is just a picture he is using, those are new shocks and Eibachs.

If you can get the pin to spin, then you are generally home free. On the Stepson, I had the car on jackstands and used a floorjack at the end of a wrench on the pin nut and basically jacking the weight of the car to finally break the pin loose from the suspension. I then used an impact to spin it while spraying lubricant on it whilst prying it out.

Hope you have better luck that I did. I had to cut my rear control arms off. Mine were totally seized with the pins rusted to the center bushings of the shocks. There are openings in the bottoms of the hubs, but I don't think they are super useful. The reason why is that the pins (as I recall) fit loosly in the hubs and it is the conical washers on either side of the hubs that keeps the hubs positioned correctly. The points where I think you can get stucks are: the inner metal bushing of the shock to the pin and the inner metal bushings of the control arm to the pin.

Hah, it's a rite of passage, I tell ya!

On my car, it worked best to push it from front to back (no idea why!). To do that, remove the brake and backing plate. I backed the nut off far enough to completely cover the threads on the end of the rod, and then gave it some 'loving taps' with my 3-lb sledgehammer. Took several of those, but then I could tell it had moved. A 3/8 socket extension is perfect to push it the rest of the way out through the hub and the concave washers.

Absolutely right. On the set I took from the salvage yard I had to cut the pin on both sides of the shocks. I had the remainder of the pin machined out because a 10 ton press was useless. I thought the shocks (Boge) were worth the effort.

No its not.........this the internet and we believe

OP.....ensure the car is level and supported at the same height on both sides.....unbolt the sway bar, both sides.....remove the front nut and spin the pin with an impact gun then drive it out to the rear.........use the lube of your choice...KY might not be the best choice.

Once out check the pins for straight....if they're bent replace.

Bertrand, great link. I believe the rear suspension pins in our cars were just as seized.

just to be TOTALLY clear, these 2 pins from hell are number 1 on my hate list, probably for life....

It was just insane how seized they were. I was determined to get the pins out, I made a mistake in my earlier post, I was not using some sissy 5pound hammer, I was using a 20 pound sledge.

Even with heat, wd40 and a 20 pound sludge I managed to get one pin out but pretty much DESTROYED the treads on the pin. It was not easy and took much longer than I would have liked. Even a full out blow with a 20lbs sledge, the pin almost did not move!!.

I gave up half way though the other side and decided to just pull the complete suspension!!! Oh, and I destroyed that pin also.

It gets better, I called the dealer for a new pin and at almost $100 a pin I said forget that and I went and pulled the rear suspension on my parts car and brought that to the machine shop to have them PROPERLY pressed out. Lesson learned.

Since EVERY thing is apart, I will be having most stuff media blasted and painted...... one of those "while I am in there moments" .

It sounds like you're all set now. However, 928 Intl. sells used pins for $35 each (last time I checked). There's no real need to buy a new set unless the used ones are out of stock.

The trick part now is to use the correct anti seizing compound to prevent this from happening again. Or just paint them and grease them?

Glad that there out.
Like you said, it was - and by far - the most frustrating job I did on my car.
A lot more difficult than the TB/WP, Intake and valvr covers R/R, etc...

I'm at cleaning everything, replating, a little bit of powder coating and repainting my calipers before putting all back together.

I take my time to do it right. At least, I try...

+1 on used pins from 928 Intl. A lot cheaper than new ones.
That's what I did and very happy with the one I got.

well, it aint over till its over.

The machine shop called and they could not press one of them out so they had to cut the pin, remove the shock then press out the remaining pin . But wait, it gets better .

they destroyed the 2 bushing

But wait , it gets better..... I called the dealership and the bushing are backordered until the end of time.

So, a job that seriously was supposed to take a saturday morning to install has left me with 2 928 rear ends torn apart and damaged bushing and I still end up having to order some suspension pins almost a week later.

Who would have though it could go this wrong .


I will call 928intl for some suspension pins and patiently wait for delivery

So, what are the options for the bushings? Does anybody have some urathane bushings? Please tell me YES.
