Default 928 GTS with metal nose?

Hi

Recently during a garage visit an autoelectrician moving the car out, bent and damaged the front nose cone. An old guy who works in the bodyshop (non-Porsche) next door examined it and said he could beat out the damage. I said the front nose on a 928 is plastic. He said yours is not it's metal. Look closely.

Needless to say I am amazed as I have never even heard of a 928 with a non-plastic nose.

Has anyone else?

My 95 GTS was purchased in 2000 from Porcshe Werks 1 in Stuttgart. It had been a Porsche Staff car since new and was fitted with a new engine after I had agreed to buy it.

After 1.5 years since discovering RennList... your first post is one hell of a bombshell!

Welcome to the shark tank... and yes, pictures are mandatory for such a claim!

However, this is not beyond the realm of possibility. I think it is a permanent fixture in their museum, but Porsche did create a one-off ALL aluminum 928. That includes the nose, tail and side skirts. Presumably, even the steel body was in reality made of aluminum as well. A bare, all-aluminum silver rocket!

Now, this isn't something that just happens. Think about it... many pieces were probably scrapped to get to just the right fit & finish for their one-off engineering exercise. Your GTS may have gotten one of the nose cones that were deemed unworthy of 'bare' presentation -and got painted.

You just never know about these things... but we need pics anyway -because we love all 928's!

Can it be that the old geezer's eye sight isn't what it used to be. But, stranger items have turned up here, so it is not excluded beforehand. We need pics! Very interested to see.

This reminds me of the phone call we got from the owner of a FACTORY TURBO 928. The guy "argued" with Jeannie for 15 minutes or more and was insistant he had a rare Factory 928 Turbo.

Finally Jeannie handed me the phone...my first question was...

"Which end of the car is your engine at"...the guy thought I was being insulting...I repeated the question again and would not continue the conversation until he answered my simple question....

BUT, you know, 930 is only 2 numbers higher than 928, so he was "close" :-)

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof! Like DR's 928/930, this would be HIGHLY unusual for a 928!

That doesn't mean it isn't true. Just because Stephen (like myself) is not a regular poster here, it doesn't make him a 928 newbie - I have been aware of him as a 928 owner for at least five years. So, unless he is playing some very obscure joke on the entire 928 community, I am confident that he believes that his nosecone is metal.

I'm sure that it's going to be a major talking point at 928 meets; how long before it's ready for everyone to poke and prod Stephen?

No poking... just want pics.

Personally, I'd like to see an Ameretti Violet GTS!

After watching Porsche metalworkers beat 911 bodies to submission to fit into fixtures for spot welding in Stuttgart, anything is possible, if unlikely. They may have made some steel and/or aluminum nose pieces to confirm the press work. Steel (Rearden Steel?) wouldn't be any more unlikely than aluminum. In any case, coming from Werkes 1, it may have been a test nose of some type. Photos of the attach points and ihe nose might further clarify, or not.

Considering one of the HUGE selling points that Porsche had made about the 928 from the very beginning was that the front and rear bumper covers were flexible so that the car would survive hits up to 10kph (or something like that) I can't imagine they would have gone backwards for even a one off metal nose... Not to mention the level of extra work required to make that happen... I am not saying it didn't I am just saying if you are going to make a one off claim like that then you really have to support your position with full documentation.
