Default Decided to go Electric...........

On the radiator of course, LOL.

Well I had posted a thread about my Temp concerns, so I decided to research about going electric instead of adding oil to the fan clutch.

Turned out costing me $50.00 for everything.

1) Electric fan from a 90s model 3.8 Liter Ford Taurus = $15.00
2) Thermostat control for fan from Autozone = $30.00
3) Zip tie kit for mounting fan to radiator = $5.00

I set it on the low fan speed which is about 2800CFM.

Here are a few pics

This is no upper shroud:

This is with the upper shroud:

Here is the space I gained:

I removed the airpump as well. Being with the Y-Pipe, I dont need it anyway.

I tested it last night. In our lovely New Orleans 90% Humidity, LOL and 90 degrees it sat and idled for 10 minutes with no AC. The gauge got a needles width above half. I then turned on the A/C and let it sit for another 10 minutes, and the gauge got one more needle with higher. No where near the second line.

So, I would say this is a success.

I also tested out the Alternator with the headlights on, A/C on and the new fan. I still showed 13.4 volts are the jumping post.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the compliments.

Ok Bimmer. Actually its a electric fan thermostat. Its a nice cheap setup really.

Heres the link.

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=326161_0_0_

It contains a relay, wiring, adjustable POT (for temp), Fuse, and temp probe (fits in the fins of the radiator)

Hope this helps

Hey! Im going to convert to electric as well quite soon and it looks like you have a good set up, would you mind detailing the mounting points a little bit more? Are zip ties really all you used to mount the fan?

Hey guys,

Sure was Chris, damndest thing too. Looked good, but I kept remembering how you said yours looked good as well, but didnt perform well.

Ok, Jsulli. The "Zip tie" kit from autozone is this one: $5.99

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...uestid=7249736

The bottom of the Taurus shroud is just sitting in the lip of the factory shroud location. I simply used two of the little "Zip Ties" in this kit, through the factory Taurus shroud locations. (one on top and one on the side). These little mounting zip ties fish straight through the radiator fins and have a disc loc on the other side.

Will do Antsmands. I tell ya bro when its on, it feels like when I had the cutch fan running at about 2K rpms. It seems to really move some air and for only $15.00 from Pull-A-Part, I couldnt pass it up.

Until we start seeing new cars factory equipped with zip ties holding fans to radiator cores I think it is putting a lot of stress where it is not designed to be. I know most aftermarket fans offer that as a way to install but they are ONLY concerned with selling add on fans. And with ALL add ons it has to be easy if you want many people to do it. Does it work ? Yes. Is it good for the radiator ? Probably not.

Touche' James,

While this is not my daily driver, I will keep an eye on the Locking Nylon rods (Zip Ties) though. If I see they are starting to pull out or give a little I will build a couple of brackets. The only two axis that these are supporting is force pulling away from the radiator, which I would imagine would be during acceleration and side motion during a turn. The weight of the shroud and fan is supported on the bottom by the factory shroud support, so I dont think they will be a problem.

That is a good point about factory manufacturers not using this method to hold on a factory shroud or fan.
