Default steering joint question

Any tricks to get the joint loose on my rack, guess 30 + years have made a solid "relationship" with the rack!!

I've used a tie rod fork with a wrench behind it.
Generally the plastic shaft cover is brittle and gets expended.

Have also used a wedge to tap open the pinch groove.

Maybe others have a more gentile manner.

Check out your joint. Have seen three now that were toast.

I use an air hammer with a chisel to knock it up. Even the hardest ones come off with ease.

On my 968 I had success using a cold chisel to carefully wedge open the pinch groove ...

Opening up the pinch groove has been my method. Some of these are real bears, some not. Clean up the flutes inside and hope you can get it back on easily. The fun part is that this joint has twice as many teeth as the steering wheel. So, you can easily end up a tooth off. Sure, you could adjust that out by offsetting the tie rods just a bit, but the proper method is to remove and reset the lower joint so the steering wheel and rack are both centered together.

The little black plug, drivers side, covers the rack centering dimple.
