Default Short-Throw Shifter

I know, I know; use search. I did, but didn't get what I was looking for!

Many of you have probably read this: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-red-line.html

And several have said "put in a short shifter".

I have never driven a "short shift" car.

How would you all describe it, and is it worth the hundred bucks?

Is it like a "spreader vs. an 8' 2x4", is it like a "funnel vs. a five gallon pail", etc.

Are there drawbacks? Like vibration or noise, etc.?

Comments and opinions please!

Lizard shifter demo

My 2-Stage shifter demo

Replacing the bushings in both the front and rear links is a highly effective first start
The 928 Intl short shifter is tried-n-true.
The Lizard shifter is nice, but very precise. Takes getting used to it.
My prototype shifter is a combination of the Lizard shifter and the 928 Intl shifter

There are different short shifters. easy to install. I started with a reasonable one. Which I would sell for 55 plus shipping. I'm used to it now and could stand a tighter shift. When I first drove a car with a lizard I didn't like it , but now I believe I could handle it. The gear pattern is tight. where the regular shifter feels like you move at least 3 inches between gears the short shifters will feel like 2 or less . These are estimations, but to give you a visual. Hope this helps

Ya, well; shifting these cars is a lot like "sifting"! You never really know what gear you just grabbed!

I much prefer my "Roger box" (where, exactly did that come from? Anything to do with Roger Tyson?) but that has other issues right now so I am forced to the "OH ****, WHAT GEAR AM I IN?" car!

Nothing but good things to say on the original short shifter from 928 Intl.

Makes shifting less tractor like. Looks much better. Simple install.

I think you will be happy with it.

Someone suggested "928 Motorsports".

How many are there?

What are the differences?

I know nothing about this. That's why I am asking!

Sorry for my ignorance!

And thanks in advance for any "useful" comments.

It would make a bigger difference to me if the gearboxes themselves were faster, like in 944.

They're not. Too notchy.

So keep the big campy shifter.

Unless you like the aesthetics of the short handle.

Yea, if that's the case, just chop the top off.

The later BW boxes can handle a quicker shift.

IMO the short shifter is a huge improvement. But it will still feel like stirring oatmeal, only with a smaller spoon. After I used Carl's ball cup upgrade it felt more like actually working the gears/synchro's, instead of trying to flip a fish out of water barehanded while blindfolded.

Get it. Even if you are cheap. It is worth it.

Exactly what I was thinking.

The way this '82 shifts; the way it "grinds going into 1st", the way it sometimes "Locks out 1st"! I question if a "short shifter" would be worth it. I'm thinkin not!

Thanks for all the opinions.

Cheers,

Denny

How is your stock shifter, fundamentally? Bushings been replaced?

Just replaced them this past weekend. Check link in first post. Ball cup replaced recently too.

I believe syncro's are shot though.

If you just want a cheap short term fix, cut down the stock shifter.
Dramatic difference and it will only cost you time and 4 new plastic bushings that go into the shifter "barrels".

As others have said above, you definatley need to make sure your front ball cup and rear bushings are good before you do anything.
