The reason 928 racing in Germany didn't happen
This is fact, the Porsche motorsport division was going to have a one make race series. They had just had the race series for the 944 turbo in 1986 and following that success the company wanted for the following year to race the 928 in a one make series, like Carrera Cup.
They called retired driver and Porsche engineer Herbert Linge out of retirement to run the series. Linge recounts,"The idea was, after the 944 Turbo Cup, to do it with the 928, I am not going to do it, but I would it if they agreed to do it with the 911."
So in late 89 they selected the Carrera 2 and produced a small series of cars and as they say the rest is history.

I don't think that is the way it happened.
The developpement of the 928 cup car was a demand of 928 owners that want to track them. Then on the "famous" 89 CS they have in stock they developped a set of parts. But 928 cup race never developped as not enough team decided to race them finally.
The developpment car raced several time in 94 and 95 season (by memory) by the designer team of the races parts with a certain support from porsche factory. The car experienced an engine failure at the end of 95 that lasted the 928 experience cup car. It has been sold to Kauffman that raced it in the late 90's and did some modification (not so well made) and lasted with repeted engine failure. The car is know in France, it is mounted with an S2 engine that doesn't output high HP and is in very poor condition. I drove it last October until it failed with oiling issue. That car might have been reconstructed from scratch with all the good stuff mounted on it and a good engine.
The way it goes on the track is very good indeed. But it lacks better output from the engine and of course reliability as we break something each time we race it.
Porsche factory decided to developp carrera cup as it was a demand from the customer worldwide.

I can only imagine what a "cup" version of the GTS might have cost. 1.5-2X the retail price of a showroom 928 if the current gt3 vs C2 cost ratios apply. I'm sure they would have sold a ton of them...
Fast-forward. Looking forward to seeing "cup" versions of the Cayenne and Panamera soon. I nice black Panorama RS Turbo could replace my relatively-ancient 928.

It's a good thing Porsche didn't.
Look at how Mark Andersons 18 year old car is beating current 911 Cup cars TODAY. If the 928 had been done like this, there might not have been a 911 now.

we all agree that Porsche should have raced the 928......just by looking at the success privateers on limited budgets have had many years later show the strength of the platform....
I believe there is NOT another car out there that can match a "gut and go" 928 racer on a lap time vs $$$ challenge....not even Miatas...not even close....

* No, Cheburator identifies this as the TTP car.

But who can argue with 193 mph?
