What ever happened to repairing exhaust holes with soda cans and wire? I've done it successfully.

Texas 'fix' was a sectioned aerosol window cleaner spray cans with hose clamps IIRC Bill.

Would try it too, but I believe the cracks are right where the small pipes join together.

Default Bob, Use the Welder Bob!

Seriously, I have a guy locally here that does all my exhaust work on everthing else, and the mission has been only to replace that which could not be reasonably fixed. We've been welding up stuff for years, and, if it's done right it lasts quite a while. It's the most time and cost-effective service option.

It's a private shop that does a lot of custom work though, and it's the owner looking after the customers. so, we're not talking a Midas or such where all they want to do is replace everything from the manifolds back everytime theres the slightest issue.

If that were the only problem I was having, and with everything else going on, I'd be tempted to pick up a couple of packages of "Muffler Bandage" from the local jobber, do the trip and worry about it later. The only people who are likely to notice are the ones who pass out in the parking lot at the BW and wake up to a view of your undercarriage. (I'm gonna leave that one alone now...)

Or Brian, if he's lurking.....

I think if I am replacing them, I wouldn't want to go back to stock manifolds. I think I would have to get headers again. Not sure the time table works out.

Yeah, it's loud and ugly. I am bringing my dad along on this trip and there is no way I can have him in the car for that long sounding like this. I am taking it to a locally owned exhaust shop tomorrow.
I snapped some pix. I must say that I am really puzzled. Doesn't look like the holes are that big, but it sounds terrible. Also, outside of the cracks, the gasket between the flanges needs replacing for sure.
Could this really make the sound that bad? Also, are these cracks a candidate for welding? Should I try the paste they sell at AZ?
Thanks,

Thanks,
Bob as a qualified welder I would say you need to blast it and then maybe patch it. You will be living on borrowed time. I haven't read the whole thread but if you just need to fix it to register it or drive it short term that will fix it. Otherwise muffler bandage and putty, if you get a good bandage that will last as long as the weld as those headers are life's out.

If you blast them, you will have a much larger area to weld in.

I say to leave them on the car. And have a good welder MIG weld them. This will get you to/from SITM and then order a new set and have them ceramic coated!!!

That's where they always rust out first. Right at the collecter.

Putting in my 3rd set in twenty some odd years as part of the Spring project.

This time, I sent them out to be coated by Jet-Hot.

Since each of first two sets lasted 10+ years, I figure I'll get at least 15 - 18 years out of the coated ones.

Wire brush the area and put on several layers of JBWeld. Then more JBWeld. That should get you down and back, then replace when you have the time.

Well, it's at the muffler shop now. When they got it on the lift, I could see the big hole. There is a hole about the size of two or three quarters on one of the pipes. It was on the inside portion of a pipe right before the collector.
They are gonna give a call and let me know what's up.

I have a set of Coated Hooker Super Comps on my (Johns now) Chevelle that are over 20 years old and still look great,

They will last a very long time coated.

Bob,

Can you snap some photos of the rest of the exhaust? Once I see that I can probably put togther a "care package" that you or the exhasut guy could bolt right up.

If I can come up with a good solution for you from the pics I can ship it all up to you ASAP. All I ask is to cover the shipping cost. OR, as I said before I can have what you need pulled and ready for you when you come down.

OH, worse case scenario, WalMart has some cheap effective and comfortable ear plugs for you Dad :-)....which is GREAT that you are bringing him to SITM.

You guys have no idea how much it means to me that you enjoy SITM so much that you bring familiy members, and for some reason a 928 Owner bringing his Dad with him to SITM gives me a VERY special warm and fuzzy feeling and HUGE sense of pride. My Dad will be 84 in a few weeks, and his atendance every year means the WORLD to me.

Just let me know what I can do to help....heck since you said you are bringing your Dad..I will toss the Ott X-pipe in that "complimentary pile" for you if needed and/or usable with your system...., for no other reason then to honor and celebrate 928er's Dads that come to SITM.

A Father and Son bond is a very special bond..but when both are "Car Nuts" and do "Car stuff" together....NOTHING can come close to a "bond" like that, it is something to cherish and CELEBRATE!
