Headers Rusted-AMAZING repair pix post 50
Well, I was driving home from my alignment yesterday and noticed the car just didn't sound right. It sounded rough and loud.
I crawled under and noticed the gasket where the headers meet the y-pipe had rusted away and was hoping that was the problem. Dropped it off this morning (figured for $30 it would just be worth it to have done by someone with a lift). The just called and said that the headers had rusted through on both sides.
Don't think I want to drive it down to the mountains like this. I think I would go nuts with that much noise for that long.

So when do you think would be a good time to replace the headers? Now, and the drive to SITM, or a year from now, to make next year's event and miss a summer of driving? I'm thinking now.
Access for replacement is easier on a lift but really not that tough with the car on stands. I'm sure there are one or two decent sets of exhaust manifolds available from 928 Int'l, along with a set of gaskets and hardware. Get started right now with some liberal doses of penetrant (Kroil or ATF/acetone) on the header nuts, re-treating twice a day for the time it takes for the parts to arrive, less 1 day. Use that day to get the old ones off, and you'll be ready when Brown-truck Santa shows up with the new pieces.
Why put off 'til next year what you can enjoy doing today?

Go to a muffler shop and have them weld the holes up, I have done it a few times, not from rust, but from dragging them.
You can just cut a section of new pipe that is slightly bigger and wrap it around the rusted spot and weld it up.
Pretty simple problem to solve

I know I have two weeks, but I also have house guests, hosting a class reunion and putting in extra time at work to get the time off for SITM. If I can find a shop that I can take it to that will try the welds, I will.
I think if I am replacing them, I wouldn't want to go back to stock manifolds. I think I would have to get headers again. Not sure the time table works out.

What kind of headers are they? I have a set of ceramic coated MSDS headers collecting dust in the hatch of my 79. I wasn't planning on installing them any time soon. I don't think they've ever been installed.
I can head down any night this week, pick some place along the way to meet up.
This does bring up an interesting question, where the heck is my 79?
