First repair bill
Well after driving my S4 pretty much daily since November, I had to finally get it to the shop last week (a pretty good run when you first buy a car). I got it out of the shop today, and they have dealt with several minor issues, but I'm having some trouble interpreting their findings.
I have had fuse panel problems recently, with an intermittent connection for climate control and Fuse 17 is melted in place. They spent some time and say they got it working pretty good with a bypass, but I was told "the fuse box is burned and should be replaced." Is replacing the entire fuse box a standard remedy?
I heard a loose brake part and asked them to check. They found that a "horn bracket" on the front brake was broken, and they said "good luck finding one, we'll just strap it down." So it is jury-rigged now, but safe and quiet, what part are they talking about?
They managed to restore my windshield washer system and flush out the headlight system so both are working, it's a miracle.
Also got world's most expensive oil change, with 8 quarts of some fancy 5W40 synthetic that is supposedly better than Mobil 1.
Oh, and new O2 sensor should help my minor mixture issues, they tested the old one and said it was slow.
Total bill: $916
A clean getaway for a 928, I was bracing for hidden problems to emerge.
I guess it is finally my car.

From my readings here, there are many competent repair shops/people in the state of CA. These guys don't sound like one of them.
You might start by asking them where the rest of the oil is that they should have added. Even better, it's probably worth you checking the oil level - something you should do at every fill up even if you don't work on your own car.
Good Luck with the next 6 months of problem free driving!

Well I have not had many troubles with this shop over the past several years, they have done wonders with my old 944. Their invoicing process is not quite rigorous, however, so if the invoice states 8 quarts, it may or may not reflect the amount actually used.

I need more customers like you,
naaa, I enjoy sleeping at night.
Even I don't know what they replaced on your car, but no, I'd not replace the entire CE panel unless it has all melted. You can replace each 5 fuse section separately.

Honestly $916 sound like an awful lot for the results they delivered. Somewhere in time you're going to say, to heck with it, I'm doing everything myself, just like most people here.

Otherwise I hope you keep a fire extinguisher in the passenger compartment... (which is a good practice period...)

So they bypassed a fuse after a fuse melted...so they've treated the symptom and not figured out what caused the current draw to be so great as to melt a fuse (not merely blow it)....I am hoping you mean to say they put in an inline fuse of equal rating and blow speed.
