Default Exhaust for ROW S (S2)

Hi there, on my 84' ROW S (S2 - LH - 310hp) I have got a rattle from the exhaust. I have found that it originates from the front muffler.

I dont fancy buying another OE muffler.

What are my ''off the shelf'' options? Straight pipes? X-pipe?

Here is the muffler I want to replace:

Buy a pair of US 85/86 manifolds from 928international (they're stainless, and a big improvement on the cast iron stock ones on your car).

Then add an adapter (to correct for the manifold spacing) and a Y-pipe from one of the vendors (I think Roger sells both of these items?).

More noise, more power, less rattle.. whats not to like?

If you have a dual pipes out of the OEM muffler, you might want to do a X-pipe instead of a Y-pipe if you want to use the OEM cat-back. I did exactly what Hilton said on my '84 Euro, but used a X-pipe instead of a Y-pipe.

Y pipe would not be right. The car has dual exhaust all the way (like all ROW's S)

Also Im not interested in changing the manifolds. Just looking for a replacement for the muffler part. Bolt on, preferably

Are there any ''off the shelf'' x-pipe solutions out there?

And, I see that the front muffler part for the ROW S (S2), and the S4 (without cat) shares the same part number.

This means I can use a x-pipe from an S4 application on my ROW S?

any insight is appreciated!

This is correct. You can purchase a X-pipe and it will bolt right up to the cast manifolds. If you change to the 85-86 US manifolds, you have to buy the spacer too.

The best X-pipe is the Motorsports SLC pipe. It is based on the original Ott design with improvements. You can get it at 928s R Us. They have a website or just call Roger (Rog100 on Rennlist).

Thanks for the input.

I will check around for a suitable X-pipe.

By chance, does anyone know the size (dia) of the Original enxhaust pipes? Also, are they OE stainless?

cheers for your input!

Doesn't the Euro front muffler have a built-in crossover? I really like the sound of my stock system but I'm always wondering what an x-pipe and '85-86 manifolds would add. ~15HP?

Ah cool.. I haven't had a look under a pre-S4 car before.

Do the early S (80-83) also have full dual exhaust? Or is it just the 84-86 S2's?

The 85-86 manifold mod, and gains had been discussed. But my guess is you won't find a definitive answer for the manifold mod alone, because it's usually done in combination with another exhaust mod.

FWIW, I gained 10% rwhp on a 4.5L by adding the 85-86 manifolds and opening up the exhaust (y-pipe).
So were talking 180 to 196 rwhp.

Hilton,
80-83 ROW EuroS have duals. Not sure about the US 'S'

Hi

If you have the last of the S2s like mine , which is the 86 year, with the 310 HP engine and S4 suspension and brakes and twin piped exhausts all the way back after coming out of that front box, then do what I did...

I got an X-Pipe from Richard Armstrong in the UK ( http://www.ritech-systems.com/porsche.html ), which is a straight replacement for your front box...

I did a few more things further back like removing both middle resonators and the huge kidney shaped box at the rear and replacing it with a Paul Anderson straight through box...but its VERY VERY loud..think 130 db at full chat...

But the X-Pipe is easy and a straight bolt on fit...and Richard is much closer to you for carriage etc...

All the best Brett

I use an 87 S4 catalytic converter as the heart of an '84 S2 system.

Like an X, it should be direct bolt-up, or very close at front (might need to squeeze the L & R downpipes together with a pipe clamp about 1/2 inch during the mount). Not sure if the discharge pipes will need to be adapted or not for you.

I run to a Y, then take it out the back through a 3" Spin Tech single.

Thanks for your input. The exhaust on my 84 S2 is the same as on your 86 S2.

I will contact the company you mentioned. I have also contacted 3 companies in the US ref; x-pipe.

Cheers for the info.

At the moment I am not looking at changing the manifolds. Its merely a replacement of the front muffler :-)
