M/B SILVER ARROWS ringing any bells for you??? Red Italy, Green GB, Blue/White USA, White Blue ... hmmm...don't remember Switzerland or Sweden, blue France...
Of course the colors could have changed over time or been added to over time as well...but I think these were the first country/color applications for racing.
How about in the case of a repair. I would think a solid a color can be touch up much easier than a metallic. Right?
You are correct. Metallics can be difficult to match, and even then the variation in technique used to apply can sometimes lead to a noticeable difference if you're only respraying a portion of the car.
Chip repair is also more difficult, as the metalflake tends to settle in the repair. Multiple thin layers must be employed rather than a few thick layers.
Despite this, Porsche made some absolutely gorgeous metallic colors and I'm very happy to have one of them.

I saw something on TV I will share. These Auto Union cars are considered by some to be the most valuable cars in history. After WWII we took over the west of Germany and the Russians took over the east where the Auto Union factory was and their Silver Arrows. The Russians took the cars to do research on them. They could not duplicate the complicated fuel mixture the cars used so when the cars had no fuel left the Russians could not get them to run. They dismantled or damaged most of them. One complete dismantled chassis was found in a Russian cave by a man from Florida that restored it.
