Default About 928 colors...

Hi All

The decisions been made to buy a 928, when the right one comes along... So I'll be joining you all soon. :-)

Two questions that I haven't really yet found an answer to:

1.) How durable are the solids in comparison to the metallics? One car I'm considering is a red 90 GT.

2.) Is there an iconic color for the 928? After seeing sooo many colors, I would have to almost say no.

Thanks for the input!

Cheers,

JP

Back a zillion years ago with countries sponsored their racing teams each country had its own color. The color for Germany was silver. That is why you see so many silver Porsche and M/B cars...at least in part why (silver is also really one of the easiest colors to keep clean). Of course Guards Red is a VERY COMMON Porsche color.

I think the solids in general do last longer than the clear coated metallics, but Porsche did a VERY, VERY good job with their clear coated colors and they do last very well, so you can't go to wrong with any late model 928 color! I can tell you this Guards red attracts A LOT of attention...some of it is not the good kind either! Silver attracts VERY LITTLE attention. If you want to be noticed a little bit, Grand Prix White is hard to beat...

Yes, indeed. I have it in my mind that Guards Red is the color for a 928 or a 944.

This also happens to be the color of the GT I looked at. I never thought I wanted a red car. But after looking at the car and driving it, I think it would be not bad at all.

Thanks also for tip about attention. I'm not sure, if I really want that much attention... :-)

The overriding issue is fading. Any red paints fade at a much more accelerated rate than, say, blue.

Dan, that is true, but as a single stage paint they can be brought back to life many times...carefully taking off a layer of nasty oxidized paint to expose some beautiful new fresh paint and then taking care of that over time and man the car will stay beautiful till you go all the way down to primer (which will happen eventually).

That said, I LOVE the blue of your car and of my race car and BLUE82 (they are both Arrow blue) and I also love Maritime Blue (may be my all time Fav) but you just never see those colors on 928's. Precious few were ever made in the beautiful single stage blues. Most all the blues are clear coat over metallic colors.

Obviously that is sampling bias. Your guards red unit is a Euro! Goes from zero to traffic court in 4.7 seconds!

I didn't realize Porsche made colors other than Guards Red.

They could have stopped making cars after your GTS... And ended on a high note.

I thought Germany's racing color was White. Hence all of the white german race cars in the 60's 70's. Grand Prix Weiss.

Blue ones are the fastest though, keep that in mind.

IMO, stay away from the "standard" colors if you can. Porsche made so many cool "one off" or low production colors. The car is cool and unique. All the better reason to find one in a unique color.

Fwiw, I have a Red 951 and know 5 other local guys with Red 951s. Really take away from the unique qualities of your own car to show up to a Porsche gathering and have "just another red one"

When I bought the 928 I was down to 2 black ones and an Espresso Brown Metalic. I chose the brown one since they were more rare and unique.

OK guys. This is all really useful to me. And Cole, I happen to love the brown espresso metallic you have there. :-) I would snap that up in a second!

How about in the case of a repair. I would think a solid a color can be touch up much easier than a metallic. Right?

The main problem with Red is that it is a Ferrari color for sure. Only after Ferrari do I identify it with Porsche.
