Your problem is that your oil leaks were not extensive enough to keep the crossmember coated in oil and rust-free.

Yep, you are right. But I am planning on cleaning the rust off, spraying on some etching primer and then spraying on some engine enamel paint.

I would consider getting the crossmember PC'd in a black. It will be much more durable than engine paint over the long haul. And have superior scratch/chip resistance when you're reinstalling it. Just a thought.
Looking good, MMOPG is a big, messy job!

So have still not gotten back into the reinstall mode. I ordered some armor rust rescue to take some of the rust off. Here are the pictures.

The liquid is actually like water and clear. After it starts to work and takes the rust off it starts to get black.

Update.
This weekend, I tried to finish the job, but as usual things don't turn out as expected.
Thanks to Roger for expediting the new bolts to me. Replaced to over torqued bolts. The broken bolt in the motor mount came out, but the threads got mucked up. Tried chasing the threads from the otherside with bolts, die etc. The bolts would go through with a lot of effort but would not come out easy. Tried the die and it would get stuck about 3 turns from the end. I was using a craftsman open end 7mm wrench due to limited space and die size. The open ended wrench got deformed as I was putting so much force and the die would not turn. I was afraid the the die would break, so went an alternate route. Spent about 8 hours on this and finally gave up. Went to HM and bought a thinner bolt that would go thru and put a nut on the other end. Seemed to work fine.
Got all the painted pieces put on the car, but now have a problem with getting the steering universal joint on to the new rack.
Losened the rack again to align it better with the universal joint but it does not want to go in. There is not much room to put a lot of force to get these properly seated. Took out the upper bolt of the universal joint and now that bolt also does not want to go back in.
Any special method to get the universal joint to fit the steering rack?
