Default Cables help...

88, S4

I adjusted my bowden cable tonight since it was around 8mm or more out of adjustment. Shift smoother now and holds RPS longer before shift, seems quicker and more responsive...I was happy.

THEN I noticed the slack on the other 3 cables and I am having trouble identifying these cables in the shop manuals...can you please help and let me know what they are and what the "mm" slack tolerance should be.

Thanks...

As viewed from the driver seat:

Bottom Right=throttle pedal
Bottom Left= cruise control
Top Right= throttle valve
Top Left=Transmission Pressure (bowden) cable

A quick search of the list will give excellent instructions on adjusting all four.

You cable identities differ from what my shop manual says, also I adjusted the Bowden cable and it is the one per my manual and per the shift differences I felt after to be what you mark as cruise...?

your pedal cable definitely looks a bit slack. my was terribly stretched and worn... the replacement made a big difference.

thanks Amonman and Bert, I agree with what you are saying regarding what the cables are. The manual just confused me.

thanks for the input...

We are getiing lost in semantics/descriptions. A "bowden cable" has a springy bend in it to eliminate or at least reduce chatter. The diagram that Bertranddoust shared is correct. The cable to the transmission is the "TV" (closest translation for me is "Throttle Valve") cable, technically a Bowden Cable because of the wound springy sheath and the bends.

On the relay/bellcrank assembly, the bottom of the relay arms are pulled either by the pedal or the cruise servo, each via a cable. The tops of the relay arms pull on the cables to the throttle body for the engine, and the throttle valve on the transmission that manages control pressure and ultimately the shifting.
