Incorrect cam timing would cause the low power and backfiring thing big time... BTDT...

just a guess, but could this be a fuel pressure regulator problem. I have not had this problem with my 928, but have had same symptoms on a BMW in the past....runs, but no power under load. Sorry if I am out of line on this.

There's no getting around diagnosing that CIS system, and whatever regulator is used!
Time to break out the book and gauges.

Timing is the other bogey.

I think the regulator can be checked out with the fuel pressure checks I am going to do once I actually do them for the 1st time ever

I replaced my factory coil with the UltraCoil from Jacobs. I couldn't be happier with it's performance. Rock solid. I got mine for $50.
