Default Smog Pump/Air Pump

Okay fourm, my air pump/smog pump locked up so now the fan is inop. What is the best way to attack this.

Invest in a new/used air pump/smog pump?

Rebuild the pump?

Or invest in a electric fan for the radiator?

What are your thoughts?

AAn 82 might be different but I used the same pully right off the crank that used to run pump and fan.. Just get rid of the pump and use a different size belt

Plenty of posts about it right here. Search. Green belt. Lawnmower belt. Airpump delete. etc.

The belt will run vertical from the crank pulley up to the belt driven fan. Use a shorter belt, 20 or 21". You will not have a tension adjuster anymore so you will need to unbolt the fan at the mount bracket to install the shorter belt.

Thanks guys, thats. jwillman, I was thinking the same thing too. But I asking myself how am I going to get that belt on much less to besure that its tight. So ou think a 20 or 21" should do the trick? I will post a video in just a few....

I just got my belt from Roger. He had me measure the OD of the fan pulley. Mine was 4 1/8" and what he sent me was a 21 inch Gates 6821 belt. My crank pulley was just under 4" OD.

I have read the best way to do this is remove one upper and the lower bolt and loosen the other upper. That allows the fan to rotate to allow you to install the belt and then it is just a matter of rotating back up to install the 1 bolt you pulled.

Got it all done guys. So, paid under $7.00 for the belt. I picked up the belt from my local Oriley's Auto parts. I picked up the Gates Truflex Belt 20in. Part 1200...Industry Number 3L200 for Equipment 6720 (Whatever that means) UPC 0 72053 00099 3.

It was a perfect fit, Not too tight or lose, easy to put on....Thanks 928 Team

I just bought a 1979 SC and the Air/smog pump is non functional. Can someone advise? I live in California.
1. Should I buy new from manufacturer and install?
2. Try to find a rebuilt one or used one on this site?
3. Will the smog check absolutely fail without this part or can I pass the smog check without the pump as long as the engine is hot?

Thanks for any tips!

In California with the pump removed you will fail the visual inspection no matter what the pipe reading is unless you luck out and get a smog guy that looks the other way.

How is that Gates belt holding up for those that have done this conversion? The belt is rated for only up to 17 HP. Are there no issues with this since its just driving the fan?

I have sold hundreds of them and not heard of one single issue.
