I use my 88 S4 almost every chance I get during nice weather. That means that my 12 year old twins sit in the back. Unfortunately, the right rear belt became stuck after I had the rear panels straightened and re-skinned. The belt was very difficult to release, and it would take little pulls to finally get enough slack to clip in. It got to the point where it wouldn't release anymore, so I ordered a new one from Roger. When I got the new belt, it wouldn't release either out of the box. I asked Roger, and he was good enough to order a second one to check for himself. He couldn't get it to work either. He checked with Porsche who said the belt would work once installed. I tried this without luck. Roger kindly offered a refund. He also asked me to check with a used supplier, Mark. While he didn't have any belts, he told me that the way to unstick them was to try to slowly tease the belt repeatedly with the belt upside-down. Again, no luck.
Before I return the belt to Roger, anyone have other suggestions? I'd like to put the back seat together to use the car again.
And, lest I not forget, thanks to Roger who has been very helpful and understanding with this pain in the neck problem of mine.

I too had the same issue with the front passenger belt.
I removed the seat, replaced the anchor and carefully ensure the insert piece was perfectly straight. Worked like a charm since.

Hey guys, I just removed a set from my 88s4 that worked perfectly, Let me know if interested. I am parting out the car due to an engine fire but it was a small one and just burned the rubber bits under the hood.

I'm sorry I cant help you with your problem... cause I have the same problem
Right rear passenger seat belt wont pay out / stuck. I dont know where to begin taking the seat out to get to it... Any help would be appreciated. I hope you have better luck with yours! I drive mine every day and neither myself nor my 11 yr old son can stand NOT having a working seatbelt.

I had this problem also on my 82 Euro S. I fixed it by removing the rear seat belt retractor housing. You have to remove the rear seat back and seat side panel to get to it. Use a straight 6mm allen wrench with a socket connection and a ratchet wrench to remove the allen bolts. After removing the seat belt housing I totally retracted it and noticed a lot of water damage/corrosion. I cleaned this up the best I could then carefully checked under the housing end pieces. One end contains a coil spring you will see when barely lifting the end cap.LEAVE THIS END ALONE. Go to the other side and carefully remove its cap paying attention to how things are oriented. It contains some gears, springs and lock levers. I left these in place but sprayed some electronics cleaner on them to get rid of some oxidation and clean the area. I then put the cap back on and tightened the screws that secure the cap just till somewhat firm. If you over tighten the cap it will apply pressure to the mechanism and cause it to bind. Mine was a little balky at first so I removed the cap again and retracted the belt some and watched the levers lock up in the correct position. I then replaced the cap while keeping a bit of tension on the belt then everything worked great. You may have to fiddle with it a bit but it can be done. If that fails watch for some used ones on ebay. That's what I did to replace my ratty front ones. Good luck.

before you start pulling the new ones apart - be aware there is a ballbearing and cage device under the end cap that is used to sense any force or movement off vertical and lock the belt.
very carefully try and orient the belt cartridge in exactly the same angle it would be if installed and lightly tug and release the belt a couple of times and it should free up.
