Default What's this 87 S4 worth?

Hi All,
Requesting some expert input on a car value.
How much would an 87 S4 with 103k, clean intierior (recently re-upholstered sets), nice paint, TB/WP at 70k, with the following issues be worth?
1. AC has leak and not operational
2. Needs replace/fix Heater/AC module...currently blowing hot air
3. Oil leak 1/4 Qrt every 5k miles

I know its hard to accurately assess withouth doing a PPI but just wanted to get a rough idea. Its a local California car if that matters. Wondering if its worth pulling the trigger on it.
Thanks,
Ather

If that is all you can give us on the car, then 5 grand is a lot of money for that car.

Figure $2,500 to $12,500 depending on many factors....PPI is critical. Keep in mind the t-belt can screw up at any time, the trans dies, the L H brains fail, thrust bearing failure kills the engine, fuel line bursts plus many many more. So buy 928s as a luxury assume that it will be worth less when you eventually sell it and that any and all money you spend fixing it will NOT add anything to it's value. In the overall 928 ownership experience a few thousand more or less on the buy becomes insignificant over the years. These cars are only "worth it" if owning one makes you smile. And there is little logical or rational about it so putting a dollar figure on one means little. If YOU want it BUY it.

totally agree, thanks. It all depends on how much I want it. Just trying to put a dollar value on what to expect to pay adn not feel like I paid to mouch. It would pass smog and has a fair bit of maintentance history. Go the name of the shop where it was serviced so I'll give them a call to get a better idea of its condition. Thanks for the input

We need a lot more details(like what is the asking price for starters?). Asking what its worth depends a lot on your skills. If you can not turn a wrench there is not a 928 out there that is worth anything. If you can turn a wrench they are priceless.

Actually Jim, if the scrap metal values come up again I can always get what I paid for mine.

Now what I have in it is a whole different story.

Not saying this is the case, but I bought a 914 once and got a real nice opinion on it from the shop that did all the service. Turned out the owner still owed the shop for recent service and it needed a ton more work done to make it fit to drive, much of it kind of grey area, but some out and out baloney to get the car sold. Worse was I was still locked in a bit on some of the needed repairs with this shop.

Get an independent PPI before any serious money talk.

Is it an automatic or a 5 speed? S4's of that age came with both. 1/4 of quart of oil in 5k miles is very little consumption. Age as well as mileage determines when things like timing belts and rubber fuel lines should be replaced. Its been 33k since the TB was replaced. How long ago was that?

To give you an idea, been thinking about selling my 88. Has 150 K. Black with Black/Grey interior. Interior is in good shape. Dash and Pod are cracked, rear panels warped. Other than that in good shape.

Has had TB/WP laso plastic impeller pump with porkensioner, intake refresh along with covers, fuel lines, thermostat and housing gaskets, new #19 Ford injectors, wires, heater valve, cap/rotors, everything.

Front end has new inner and outer tie rods, upper aarm on drivers side, all wheel well plastic good, new alt hose, new fuel pump, steering rack, motorsports radiator. AC has been converted.

Has Panamera wheels and new tires. Endplay is fine and have porkens clamp to install next time I check it.

Has a handful of small items that need addressed. Cracked turn lens, drives door light switch needs replaced, cracked bumperette, rust spot under door sill and around rear quarter window. You get the idea. All the big stuff done..... but still would benefit from mm/pan gasket. Leaks 2 small drops each time you shut it off.

Sean helped me finish up timing belt and intake refresh. Was my first on a 32V and wanted to make sure its right.

Exterior has had a repaint, and would benefit from a buff/wax. Looks presentable. Has your normal nicks, dings, ect.

I would not take a penny less than 10K. I would buy the best car you can with the money you have. A 5-7K S4 will need almost everything I listed above unless you find a true deal... and they are out there. I had a very good PPI and new exactly what I was getting myself into.

I sure would hope not!

If the paint and interior shows well, the car is clean, and the mechanicals are in the 90th percentile - I don't see why these relatively sorted S4's shouldn't get $12-$15K all day long.

Now, I haven't seen your 928, Brad - but please make sure you're not selling yourself short.

Absolutely, maybe worth more when maintained like that.
They are just so much car.

Thanks again for the the additional feedback. Its an auto and the owner was asking around $7.5k before, a few months ago and was not able to sell it. Now he is just taking offers. It was his father's car who I think passed away and the car is now just sitting in his garage. Going to drive out this morning to view it (nice 50 mile drive near the coast).

The sad thing is that you'll be lucky to get $10K for that car unless you sell it to someone who really understands the value of all that maintenance. I agree with Jim and Chris that it is worth $10K+ all things considered, but you may wait a long time to get that price. A 150K mile '88 with so so paint, an automatic transmission, and the usual interior cracks is going to be a tough sell at $10K.

For example, look at how long it took Blitz928 to sell this car:
