Motor Mounts Changes - still hot air through channel???
928 Gurus,
Hopefully you can offer some help.
I have an 89 S4 with 77K miles....and for the last 5-6K I would have hot air coming down the channel on occassion. There would be hot air coming from the shifter area, ashtray and under the console. I wouldn't happen every drive...but if I drove more then 30 minutes or 30+ miles, it would start to occur.
After some advice, I have changed out the motor mounts (ordered from Roger). Just got it back from the shop...and it's still happening. I have driven twice on 40+ mile roundtrips...and it has happened on and off on both drives....and even hotter and more intense then before.
Any idea? Is this a seal issue? If so, is there a write up on how to install a new shield or seal? could it be something else?
Again...the hot air that blows doesn't happen all the time...I can drive 20-30 miles, and it starts happening then. Wouldn't the hot air blow constant if there is a gap in the motor and channel?
Any help would be great. Thanks
KEN

Thanks James
Is this something I can do myslef (kinda a newbie to the mechanical side of it all) or should I have a shop take care of it. Will it involve adding the foam from the console side or from the Tunnel directly?
Thanks

Have exactly the same problem on a customers 1991 S4. Hot air is only coming in when windows and/or the sun-roof are open. Probably it must be a seal issue. A light vaccum is created in the car sucking hot air in through any of the heater flaps not sealing properly. Will come back with more info when we have solved the problem.

Only happens to my car when sun roof is open. The ash tray area and tunnel gets very warm, can not even hold the ash tray. Shut the sun roof for the next 10 miles and it starts to cool down.

I had a similar issue with my 86.5 auto when I bought it.
Especially with the sunroof open (creates a low pressure area in the cabin I guess), I could actually feel warm/hot air flowing by the gear-selector.
I removed the center console, and cut some isolating foam to fit snug around the selector and the area around it.
Never had any issues with it anymore. Removing the console takes only approx 30-45 minutes, perhaps a little longer if you really take your time, and does not involve removing the TT :-)
cheers
