Nice catch Jim. If you have any technical questions, the guys over at 924board.org are great. BTW my first Porsche was an 80 924.

A friend of mine has a 924 with a 968 motor, 6speed and suspension. It's nuts to drive!

It does have the rather typical loose shifter syndrome common to the 924-968 cars. Makes the 928 linkage look very simple and precise. Looks like I may have to crawl under it after all.

Jim,

Check the pivot bolt at the console first. They are known for wearing out of round and causing sloppy shifts.

I'm not sure if you can bolt everything from a 951 on a 924. My friend bought a 84 944 for lemons racing and could not mount the 87 951 gear box in, holes in different location. Also, I think the 924 shares the same suspension as used on the VW Super Beetles.

Do you know if everything just bolted up? That's interesting.

I Think they changed some things after 85 for 944 cars other than the dashboard.

944 spec racer? I understand the class is for the 8V cars and some 924s are allowed.

California is amazing. Any car that age here would look like swiss cheese. Hell, cars only 8 years old here start to rust through.

The somewhat rare in the U S 924S which has the 944 engine is allowed in the spec 944 class and can be faster than the 944

No 944 or 968 engine will just bolt in. The engine mounts are in different places. You can, however just remove the mountings from the donor car and weld them on the car (if it's a regular 944 engine you shouldn't even need to remove the original mounts).
If I were you, I would just try to improve the overall car. That doesn't mean look for more power - psh, besides giving it euro parts bringing the hp up to 125, there isn't much you can do. You can mount a turbo to the car, but in that case you might might as well buy a 931. Also, if the car has the audi 4-speed, you can mount a later 5-speed essentially right on, since their casings are almost completely identical. The one year snailshell dogleg gearbox would require changing the torque tube and lots of other stuff. Rare, but not worth it considering how rare parts are for it.

924board.org is definitely where you want to go for information. Ideola is a GOD brought to earth for toofahs. He has tons of 924 stuff for sale on garage.ideola.com. He recently bought a 937 (Carrera GT), Amazing vehicle!

The 924S engine was slightly de-tuned. So taking a 924S and dropping in a 944 engine would be good for a couple HP.

The 924 and 924S had very different systems. The 924 has a cable clutch, the 944/931 have hydraulic.
The engine cross member is completely different, and attach to the frame different as well.

The 1988 924S has higher compression pistons and a short fifth gear too.

You should consider shooting Chris (RLID Genikz) a note. Both he and his brother, Josef, live in your area and are staples at PCA OCR events (El Toro AX in particular). Chris has a spec prepped 924S and Josef has a raced prepared 924. Joe recently replaced his snail shell trans with a 944 transaxle with the help of some clutch parts from a Ford Mustang. He hated the snail shell. They are super nice guys and would be a good resource for you. Also, I have an early 944 parts car in the desert that you can have anything you want off of. Some things do not translate, but the conversions are pretty straight forward. There are more similarities than differences between a 924 and early 944 chassis.

PS - Joe's cool 924

My friend's is a 924S with 968 bits. I'll forward him this thread and see if he chimes in with some pics.

This car is going to be rented to a T V show. It MAY end up back in my driveway but that is not clear at this time. Much depends on what they do to it It has been fun looking at something different as I tinker with it. Drivers door had been sagging and not closing all the way....so the alloy race jack did a fine job "adjusting" the door back up.

I have to change the waterpump on the old very brown 1980 928, t-belt, intake refresh , vacume and fuel lines so I will not be doing much to this 924.
