Default Replacing Airbag steering wheel with a non airbag version?

Hi,

I just bought a manual 928 gts -93 and would like to use another steering wheel than the original.
The main reason for this is that I have issue getting proper grip of the steering wheel and not having my head up towards the roof (yes, it has a sun roof), this is even worse if I use a helmet.

I have asked my local Porsche Center and local club without getting straight answers on how to do this operation and now I hope that someone here have done this operation and have input on what to get and how to do this.

I believe that the hub used should be the regular Momo aftermarket hub for non airbag cars from the same years, correct?

Then about getting the airbag controller to think it has an airbag attached, can someone verify that a 3 ohm restistor would do the job? Or should I use the 928.xxx.xxx.xxx plug to turn of the entire airbag system?

I someone got pictures from a job like this, I would be very thankful if they could be posted. I would especially like to see the steering consol when the steering wheel and spring connector is removed.

Best regards,
Pontus - newbie 928 owner.

I did it to my 93 GTS. Installed a MOMO wheel, mostly because I was concerned with a 18 year old air bag, and I hated the look of the stock wheel. You will need a 3 ohm resistor to plug into the air bag connector (Blue resistor tied into the orange connector). The resistor fools the air bag control unit into thinking the bag is still installed, otherwise you always have a air bag warning. Get a good quality resistor with the smallest tolerance. The first one I got had to large a tolerance and the controller gave me a warning. Second one has been perfect for almost a year now. For my MOMO I also needed a 964 (IIRC) "L" piece that for the life of me I can't find the P/N now. Got the P/N through a search on the 911 board. I got mine from Roger so I'm sure he has the number. The "L" piece connects the horn to the new steering wheel. The MOMO and the Porsche wheel have the contact ring reversed from each other.

I hope this helps, it was a lot easier to do than to write about.

One other thing, you need the MOMO adapter for the air bag wheel P/N 7004. The splines on the air bag wheel are smaller than the non-air bag wheels.

Porsche used the smaller diameter shaft like the 944 used for the airbag wheels.

There is an airbag aftermarket wheel that fits the 928 GTS. Contact TechArt in Germany - they used to sell it. There were other vendors that offered it as well. It even has the proper TÜV approval for German registration (I know - not important for Sweden, but it still is a sign of quality).

The last thing I would do is install a metal spoked steering wheel - unless you always drive with a helmet. There is a reason why those had pretty much disappeared until airbags came along...

Hi,

Just wanted to do a follow up.

I did the swap yesterday and it was a really easy job.
The images posted by Jim were brilliant for my understanding of what to do and expect.

I got hold of a 2.7ohm resistor measuring at about 2.8ohms and it worked just perfect with the car.

Upcomming event will be to make the horn work but that requires the contact.

Last thursday I took the car by the swedish "car approval inspection" and passed without remarks.

Default non-airbag spiral spring

Curious, does anyone know of this spiral spring, p/n 928.652.211.00 that might have come on a stock car with out an airbag? I have an aftermarket wheel(not a momo) that I'm trying to install but the new hub wont allow the wiring for the airbag to fit inside it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jim, Questions Sir: 1) What exactly were your concerns with an 18 year old air bag ? 2) Is the passenger side airbag still active ? 3) Is your Momo wheel much thicker than the stock wheel ? 4) Did you also have your Momo wheel wrapped over the existing cover by Paul C, therefore making it even thicker ? TIA. Momo "Jet" pic below that I was thinking about purchasing. 77Tony
