I'm usually over on the 993 forum, but I get the Bring-A-Trailer emails each day and saw this pop up this morning on Craigslist in Fremont Ca. with 79K miles on it for $4995. Is that really the going rate for one like this? I know it probably needs the spendy belts/pumps changed and god knows what else, but still ...
Anyway, all the usual disclaimers apply, no affiliation just stumbled on her and thought I'd pass it along and see what you all think.

I think that's a particularly nice car from the pictures and feel its priced about right to sell quickly, maybe $1000 or more low if its original and hasn't been reconstructed somehow. I like it. A lot.

Yes ths looks interesting. Odometer claims should be taken with a grain of salt because they tend to break. The only thing I see is that the seat bottoms might have been recovered.

That's in my neighborhood. If anyone wants me to check it out, I'll be happy to go see it. It would have to be tomorrow, though.

I just spoke with the seller. The car is at North Cal Auto in Fremont. I spoke with a gentleman by the name of Hal.

The seller states the car has just been serviced, including an oil change with Mobil 1, new plugs, new rear pads, new tires, and a smog test. Title is clear.

Hope this baby finds a good home.

Pics look very nice. Good price if it is truly as it is represented. I like the no-spoiler look on the early cars, makes it look like a true OB. 'S' brakes are an easy and inexpensive upgrade.


Of course, all the normal caveats apply, including a good thorough PPI. Budget for the usual $5k in new rubber maintenance stuff in the first year. Paint looks nice but I don't recall seeing 82's in that color before; so look for telltales of repainting if it isn't represented as painted.

it is ridiculous that a car of this pedigree in that apparent shape sits out there for so little. These cars will find a market someday, and we'll lament the days of nice looking sharks for $5K.

So, if it needed the usual 30K mile big dollar maintenance, what would it cost to have it done at a shop? Also, isn't the slate grey paint color unusual? I don't think I've ever seen an early car in this color before ...

It is definitely NOT slate grey metallic - I think it is meteor metallic, which was available in 82.

Interior is cork.

Based on that rear bumper cover I am thinking a paint job (or at least for a lot of the car anyway) will be in order (Cha-Ching) but if in fact it runs good, it would be a great car. I too love the color and the interior looks nice. The front seats look recovered as they don't match the rears in the pic (but probably match better in person) and this age car and miles it is likely the drivers seat would have a tear or two in it if it had not been recovered.

I LOVE the OB cars and this is the last of the OB's...many of the '81 and '82 US cars had the Competition package which added the spoilers and bigger front brake calipers and bigger sway bars and stiffer springs I think too.

$5k for a nice Porsche DD would be a pretty sweet deal! Probably needs $2k in parts that would probably run another $1k in labor to install, so if the paint is presentable you would have a VERY NICE $8k DD!

Thanks for the insight, Nicole. I really don't know these cars very well at all so not surprising I got it wrong (I corrected the thread title ...). I have to say, the combination of the paint color and cork interior is one of my favorites.

Its a USA 16V car w/ Jetronic. Simplest of the lot to maintain. Non-interference engine. Always gets dissed a little by the HP-talkers but its got fantastic power in my opinion as it stands.

Based on the looks of that engine compartment, complete down to the little black cap on the jump post, I don't think it'll need much.

These old V8 engines and mercedes transmissions are really overdesigned, the bodies are exceptionally strong. Amazing cars.

That paint looks great, don't touch it. The bumper covers can be matched if needed, but I'd leave it just like it seems to be, a survivor. But Nicole is the real authority on it --- with new eye surgery she can probably evaluate it anywhere inside of 75 yards.

Cost to service is in the range mentioned already. I would expect to put about $1000 in parts in that, no more. Service should be done by enthusiasts or by a special 928 person recommended by 928 enthusiasts. Maybe up to James' number of $2K parts, but something about this one tells me lower.

A guy on Pelican, navy guy goes by "Maleficio", bought an 82 very similar to this about a year ago. Paid about $4500. This one is even nicer from what I see.

I'm kind of glad it has the side moldings. Otherwise, I don't know... but I could have a weak moment... that I regret later.

No, won't happen. I don't have space for another car. The garage is full already. I could not stomach moving mooSAABi out of there.

Seriously. I remember reading in Christophorus what these cars actually cost Porsche to build and they were either losing money in the early years and just barely making a profit in the latter. When I lived in Seattle, my local dealer talked me into a test drive one day in a new S4 in 1998 and I couldn't stop talking about it for a week. Surprisingly light and agile, not like I expected at all, but the best part was setting off several car alarms in the lot when we 'rumbled' out of the lot ...

Well, the ad says 'good maintenance' has been done over the years and it's just had a bit of work done recently, plus the seller has the window sticker as well .. maybe it's a good one :-)

It's the colors, right? It's awesome.... Nicole, I think you need to go by and drive this car and report back (look at me, telling someone else how to spend what little free time they have ....) If we don't hear from you in a week, we'll know your on the phone with your insurance agent figuring out the discounts on a 'two-fer' ...
