Just drove the car and will post detail pictures later.
The good:
- engine runs well and responds spontaneously to throttle inputs
- transmission shifts smoothly
- car tracks well
- AC blows cold
- new tires all around
- new rear pads, oil change, and spark plugs (according to owner)
- nice color combination
- clean interior
- complete tool set in trunk
- carfax shows clean title, no accidents
The bad:
- it might need motor mounts - slight vibration at certain low rpms
- paint in poor condition all around; only a repaint could fix this
- dents/scratches in both rear quarters
- heat damage in interior: dashboard warped upward around defroster vents; rear quarter interior panels warped
- odometer doesn't work (see more comments on this below)
- volt meter doesn't work
- HVAC vacuum issues (some vents don't blow any air, some only warm, no matter what - cold air only through defroster vents
- sunroof doesn't work
- antenna does not retract
- passenger seat belt does not retract
- PO installed some mystery device under the steering column
The ugly:
- I didn't find anything that can't be fixed with reasonable effort
Ownership and Mileage
The car is actually sold by the owner, not by the dealer he works for. That's why it's not on their website or on their lot and can only be shown by appointment. He had it for about a year and drove it about once a week. Smog records show it at 78k in 2009. I don't believe that the car has been driven a whole lot since - most likely less than 10k miles. While it is impossible to determine exact mileage, I have reason to believe the car has less than 90k miles on it; quite possibly less than 85k.
My verdict:
This is a great car for someone who wants to drive a 928 every day at a pretty low cost and is not concerned about perfection or exterior cosmetics. Alternatively, it could be a great base for a DIY restoration.

I still REALLY like this car...but man a full repaint...ugh, not to mention a dash recovering... Those two things alone can set you back $6k without even thinking and potentially MUCH, MUCH more...but that would give you a Concours ready car after that...

Nah - if you want to do concours, you'll have to redo the rear quarters, replace the carpet, and redye all leather to match. That's not what this car is ideal for - unless, of course, you have a particular love for 82 models with 3-speed automatic.
Nothing wrong with that!

Chris,
I think Nicole and I probably do both have higher standards than the average 928 owner, but I think that is a GOOD THING!
Nicole,
I was thinking more local concours and show and shine sorts of stuff and just having the dash correct and the paint pretty good would certainly give the car a shot in those types of shows... Sure, OCIC and Parade it would not win (well, maybe at parade because it might well be the only car in its class), but you would not be ashamed of it with those two things done anyway...

Wow, Nicole, this is awesome! The passion on Rennlist never ceases to amaze ..
So, it sounds like you get what you pay for, but still a very solid example and potentially a decent 'project' for a nice DD. A lot of car for the money ....

Wow! Judging by Nicole's input about this car, mine's in much better condition
for a little bit more money and I'm negotiable. I does have higher mileage at 145,000 which is still low considering the vintage, But damn,
I can't believe how under valued these cars are. Here's mine.

Very time consuming to fix. Few of us know how. Fewer bother. Nightmare car to see rolling up to your shop if you are an independent OR porsche dealer. Not a car that commands a wide market.

Hi guys,
About the comment about your perspective. I absolutely agree with this.
I know that it's priced high for "the market" It's frustrating to me
how quick people are to point out that my car isn't worth this price, without seeing and driving the car and appreciating it for what it is, a great experience. I guess the issue is that I never buy a car as an investment.
I buy a car for how it makes me feel. I know my car, I know it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn close and I'm proud of that. I worked hard to keep it in tip top shape as I'm sure all of you have. The problem is that people seem to want to roll the dice on lesser condition examples that will most likely price them over that of what I'm selling it for. No sour grapes here, just puzzled by prospective buyer behavior and how different I happen to look at things. I'm confident my car will sell. I know it'll take a while due to people wanting to buy the market instead of the car. Just my 0.2

That said, the reason your post was quoted and laughed at was that you said "for a little more" when in reality it was TWICE as much! In NO ONES BOOK is "a little more" TWO TIMES the thing being discussed. Two times as expensive is WAY MORE EXPENSIVE, not a little more! (even if the numbers are fairly small, statistically 2X is HUGE)
So, like you I have a VERY, VERY NICE 928 for sale for WAY MORE than the car discussed in this post.
And to get back on the topic of this car...one of my local PCA friends (they actually found my '84 for me) sent me the link on this car saying I should go pick it up! LOL!

I guess you could then say mine is for sale for way way way more than the one in this thread
