So funny you should mention that... My good friend (we met because we both had '88 S4's at the time) Elliott always says we should do that commercial with me and a couple of my calendar models. Show some shots of me on some mountains that I have been on, racing moto-X and then me and the hot girls at the table..."I don't always drive a Porsche, but when I do it's a 928!" LOL!!!

But the hot girls thing is not because of you driving a 928 - it's because you are Mr. James Popular.

Hi all,

I'll start by introducing myself as the proud new owner of this 928. This is my first 928, so I really have Nicole to thank for her invaluable help and for the pictures which gave me a better understanding of it all.

I first became interested in the 928's after I ran across one leaving a City Council meeting several months ago. Parked among the Audis and the Toyotas and the Fords was this early 80's white 928. It was beaten and rough but still glowing. Being too young to remember the 928's in their heyday, I had never seen anything like it—and I'm better for it because I didn't hold a biased opinion that these were just glorified Pacers (???) or that they are somehow inferior to 911's or that they are ugly or difficult to maintain. I saw it as a proud trophy to a not-so-long-ago era when car companies designed courageously. Not for the masses but rather for the margins; and in doing so, created true classics with both style and real innovation. Classics that would command car shows, websites and Clubs decades after the first one rolled off the line.

I saw it as art because it is. I saw it as timeless because it is. And really, if one were to soften some edges, shave off some mouldings and this and that, tell me that these 928's wouldn't be as relevant and as current as any other car in a new car show, today. It'd blow them out of the water and the press would likely claim it as being a 'new car for a new way of thinking'—hell they might even call it progressive considering how lightweight and compact it is; not to mention it's water-cooled engine. It was too innovative in 1977 and like a handful of other misunderstood cars throughout history it came before it's time and in doing so it's appreciation has been slower than usual in coming. But it will because it's design is undeniable. How many other cars from 1977 can boast the same??

So yes, this car will get a quality paint job and and the carpet will be replaced and the engine will be given whatever it needs and I'll do so with pride. It deserves it. Who cares that it's an 82 and only an automatic? I live in LA and I didn't want a stick. They're a pain navigating the narrow streets of the Hills anyhow. And besides, something tells me it'll be loved by all, either way.

So I've written a novel on accident and I'll leave it at this except to say that I'll definitely be posting much more and that in addition to hours of research I'm sure I'll need some guidance in the near future once I get things settled. So, in advance, thanks.

And again thanks Nicole for your help. I'd have loved to take you up on your offer this weekend in Santa Monica but I'll have to take a raincheck if it's possible for sometime soon? I'm in San Francisco often and i'd love to see your 928s as well.

Take care all.

SURF928, welcome to the club! When you are done with this car it will be SPECTACULAR! I look forward to seeing updates on its progress!

Now you need to join the 928 Owners Club (www.928oc.org) which supports local, regional and national 928 events!

BTW, you said you were going to introduce yourself, but without a name that is not much of an introduction!

Congrats on your new car! Enjoy it in good health!

Hi Shawn! Glad you got the car, and "came out" here on rennlist. Once you are a paid rennlist member, you can post pictures and add a signature that will allow us to better identify you and your car (model year, etc).

If you are in the SF area frequently - why don't you join us for Sharks in the Park - our annual Porsche 928 picnic in the Berkeley Hills (Tilden Park) on Saturday, May 7? This is a good opportunity to learn about 928s from owners of all model years. We usually draw about 25-30 cars.

What James is really trying to say here is: "Once you are done with restoring this car, I hope to buy it from you for pennies on on the dollars you invested, and add it to my growing collection."

But he doesn't realize that I'm first in line...

Welcome Shawn - its cool to have this thread end with the purchaser join RL. First order of business should be to post pics of the car since the CL listing has expired now you have bought Oh, and I second James' recommendation to join the 928 Owners Club (even if he is the membership chair). We have a nice set of Owner Profiles developing where people post their work-in-progress.

There's no way to loose on that car.
Very nice for the years.
That engine compartment is phenomenal and complete.
Good luck!
Think hard before repainting. A little high tech touch-up and paintless dent removal (might) get it to a very good place where you can enjoy it.

Unfortunately, it is well beyond that. The pictures in the original craigslist ad are deceiving. There are aread where paint has flaked off, areas where it is totally matte, areas where it's scuffed and dented, etc. Not just small spots - those are large areas. No way to make it look decent without a respray.

Ahhh, was hoping it was better.

Was it mechanically as nice as it looks? Or is that another case of 10 foot pictures.

A question that is often asked of someone with a new car is "what will it do?"

The answer is usually something like "zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds," or something along those lines.

Well, here's the brand new 2011 Ferrari "458 Italia"

First, here's what it looks like:

And here is what it can do...

Any questions?

ROTFL!!! Shawn, the other thing you MUST realize is that you can't hide ANYTHING from Nicole! She reads between the lines and has an eye for detail when it comes to pictures that few here can match!!!

It does belong in your garage Nicole, but money talks and suckers walk, so we will see who wins the car when Shawn has had enough of it! You have me beat by nearly 2000 miles though! So, you have a head start FOR SURE!

Shawn, good luck with the restoration, when these cars are looking and running great there is NOTHING BETTER!!!
