Default used wheels ~ examination

Given the recent collapse of a used, repaired wheel mounted on a 928 while the car was in motion and the fact I;m about to buy a set of used C3 rims I'm curious re. recommendations as to what proper steps I should take to ensure any set of wheels will not suffer catastrophic failure.

TIA

First you have to HOPE they are round.....then worry about if they will stay that way. And if you buy them with tires the seller can state that they did not KNOW they were bent! Andrew has it right....pray

But, isn't there some sort of X-Ray scan they can do to detect fatigued metal? I know it's used in other applications, just don't know if it's been used on rims......

It wasn't a 928, nor did the wheel collapse.

there is nothing that you can do other than a personal inspection.

However if you want to mount them on a car and take it up to speed, let me know.

You can not magnaflux any non magnetic part.
You can use dye penetrant to check for cracks though.

A real good tire shop can check them for round, and will when you put tires on them. That, plus and honest seller who will take them back if you find a problem and you are good. Funny enough, I once bought a set of rims from Jim (and Mark A.), and he and I both looked at them and thought they were good. But my tire guy saw that they were not round right away. Of course Jim and Mark exchanged them with no trouble, but my point is that you may not be able to see a problem right away so having a responsible seller is key.

Yep, you can NDT them with a PI like Greg said. We used to do that to Al and Ti Tomahawk parts as part of our normal routine.
Of course, our parts were designed to explode so . ..

I've no idea what your first sentence means although the 2nd makes reference to aluminium and Titanium?

I thought you were a John Deere guy?
