Yesterday wondering through a shopping mall here in Shanghai they had a Mercedes display and one of the cars was a black on black SLR. It was open so I took a seat behind the wheel. It brought back all the memories of the 1st new 928 I sat in 30 years ago. One thing I could not help but think about is this a future 928?
Looking at the leather covered dash and console, black with white stitching, us 928 guys can't help but think of what this will look like in 15 years. If you have had the opportunity to sit in an SLR, it feels a lot like our cars. Yes it's very fast and very expensive. Here in China the sticker was $560,000 + duties and taxes which should put it north of $700,000. I am sure here they will sell as many as they can get into this country. ( I have no idea of they cost in the US)
Cheers

I sat in a 1984 Corvette in the showroom back in 1983. It was the brand new C4 style and red in and out. I was 16 and just licensed to drive my 78 Trans Am. I thought that this Corvette would be the ultimate car to own and drive. 5 years later I bought one with 57k miles on it for $13,800. Drove it for 3 years and 40k miles and sold it for $11,000. It was champagne with bronze(gold metallic in brown leather seats)brown interior. Ahhh-memories. Not sure if this was related but thanks for letting me reminisce. Gunar

my guess is that you are talking about the Mercedes SLS and not the Mercedes-Mclaren SLR. 2 different cars, both kinda ugly ducklings.
But the SLS is very mechanically similar to the 928. Look for the Jay Leno lap of LA video.

I have driven an SLR McLaren...SUPER FAST! I mean, scare the crap out of you fast! Tons of Tq! Interior was WAY, WAY cramped! For such a HUGE car the interior was TINY!
The SLS looks much more roomy but both are just pretty damn ugly in my view and certainly won't age as well as a 928!

TV is right, I just walked across the street and it's an SLS not an R. I agree with him regarding the looks.
In my mind the 928 is a much nicer looking car and it's really tight inside with no usable space at all.
How will it age? There are many similarities to a 928 but it's still another parts bin car and for a LOT of money. How many perfect 928's could you buy for one SLS?

Exactly(but auto). Here it is,my senior pic(sporting a sweet perm)- baby blue interior but posi-track rear end which was great for sliding around corners and doughnuts.

Just saw a NatGeo doc on the building of the SLS. So many similarities to 928 its not funny. Big cast alloy torque tube to rear mounted transaxle (with a carbon fibre shaft though), block girdle, separate pan. Timing chain, not belt (at least its a double row chain) that feeds a central gear in the front of each head, then to the cams via a changeable timing mechanism...Not abd program compared to some I have seen.

Im kicking myself for not getting a video of the exhaust when he fired it up, i couldn't think straight at the time as the sound of that 6.3 liter AMG is intoxicating... i cannot even begin to explain how ferocious it sounds. The ceramic rotors are ridiculous, appeared to be the size of most car's rims. TBH I'm somewhat bleh on some aspects of the styling, but the quality and sense of occasion is undeniable. I look forward to seeing it again during the summer months when he'd take it for a spin.

Had the chance to sit in one about 4 days before their World premiere back in 2010 - that's how things happen in Eastern Europe - and I was blown away at how good the car is. Then saw a few pedalled by their owners at the Nurburgring at pace. Finally, the GT3 version winning the Nurburgring 24hrs...
Certainly on my dream car list, and now they are sub £90k, a lot more achieavable...
How can you not like this...

I don't think either the SLR or SLS are pretty cars and if I am going to buy and ugly performance car I think I'd rather have the insanely fast arcade game AKA GT-R by Nissan! For not to much money those bad boys will put out 700HP and pretty much drive themselves around for you! They will make you look like a hero on the street or the track! Not to mention they have to be cheaper to keep than any high end MB product! Hell, replacing rotors and pads on an SLR is more than $50,000! SERIOUSLY!

Was dropping the kids off at a day camp last Friday, there was a white SLS gullwing in the lot. Doors open, and these two 5-foot-nothing Chinese grandmas get out. They had a baby stroller in the trunk, unfolded it, got the grandkid (?) from the adjacent car, and set off for a roll around Heritage park.
