Not to mention they have to be cheaper to keep than any high end MB product! Hell, replacing rotors and pads on an SLR is more than $50,000! SERIOUSLY!
These sorts of vehicles are nothing more than pace cars and flagships for companies. They just get the people in the door to buy an E-Class or something. Sure people buy them and they sell out but it's just to give a company image and bragging rights.

And, you almost touch on something:

I judge a car by it's fun factor and it's feel factor. Is it fun? Does it "feel" fast? These requirements can be fulfilled by relatively inexpensive purchases. Some of the most fun vehicles I have ever known about or driven are under twenty thousand dollars. Our 928's are excellent examples. So are Honda S2000's, VW GTI's, Mini Cooper JCW's, etc.

The GTR is certainly an amazing car for the price and is definitely going to be less than owning a high end Benz.

I'm by no means comparing a half a million dollar exotic car to a $8000 928, but I am comparing the personal fulfillment and enjoyment factor. How much more would I really be fulfilled by an SLR over a 928? Not that much. Not worth it.

James, is this why you have 3 of your 928's for sale (including your '82 Comp.) in this month's Panorama?

Nissan GTR is not a cheap car to maintain. $2000 for transmission fluid change every 18,000 miles.

LOL! Hardly! I need garage space and with the market up 25% this year, I figure someone can afford BLU82!!

Race car for sale for two reasons...shoulders can't handle the abuse of track driving and neither can my unpredictable inner ear. Thus it is ready to drive at your nearest track (though all fluids should be changed at this point) and raced with a recert on the harness and firebottle and a change of roll cage padding around the driver!

EURO85...well, just a really nice car that is worth good money at a fair price.

'89 S4...it is a rescue of a car that will make a nice DD for someone. Couldn't bear to see it go to a salvage yard and be parted out (over $20k spent on it in the last 5 years!)

I surely wouldn't turn down an SLR if it was given to me. I always liked the look, but not over a 928. I believe there was a time it was in a similar price range of the Saleen S7 & Carrera GT. Not saying any of them are worth their cost, but I won't ever have to worry about making that decision!

I was at a high end body shop about 6 yrs ago & the owner was showing me around. They had a silver SLR the owner had wrecked. He was giving me some of the costs for replacement parts: Hood-$36k; Wheels-$8k each; Carbon fiber plate the headlights sit on, $1,200 each, etc. Was interesting, he said the owner of the car owned an insurance company.
