Default Steering Rack Stops

Swaping out my steering rack with a rebuilt unit and find that the stops that were on my old rack (rebuilt by ZF and installed by PO at some point) will not fit on this new rebuilt unit. The ID of the stop is too small.

Has anyone had this issue? I am also including a pic of the stop that came off my old rack . . .

Also another interesting observation is my old rack did not have a black tube running along the top from end to end, the rebuilt rack I have does.

There are basically two different racks that take two different stops. Generally the OBs use one and the later cars use the other. But they can be use vice-versa, except for the stops. I am guessing that either you were sent the wrong rack for your S4 (this happened to me when I replaced my S4's rack), or sometime in the past somebody put the wrong rack on your S4.

More than different stops, the racks are different lengths. Going from one model to the next will totally change the toe-in on the front wheels.

Use a tape measure and verify that you've got the same rack or be clear that you're changing models.

Thanks for the help. I was about to make a big mistake by making my stops work and moving on.

I have received the shorter rack. The rack I took out of MY87 (rebuilt) measures right at 813mm (very quick measurment and could be off a couple mm) and the rebuilt new rack measures right at 796mm or so. It was already mounted and I was trying to measure by myself. But the 2 racks are not the same lenght for sure.

Does any one know which is correct for the 87?

I checked in the WSM and on Page 48-6d it shows the two different racks. Older rack 795mm and the Newer rack measuring 810mm.

WSM also details a change in stops that were used on the shorter rack vs. the longer one.

It is not clear at what point in time this change was made.

Yeah, but there is no question the change happened by the time your car was made and you were sent the wrong rack. Same thing happened to me, from one of my favorite suppliers. Since I had paid to have it shipped to Honolulu and I needed the car on line, I just put it in, and adjusted my toe. Don't have quite the turning radius I should have, which I will fix at some point. In your case, it can probably be shipped inexpensively, so you might want to return it.
