Default S4 vs a Fobra

Fobra= Fake Cobra

I don't usually race my car, but my friend just finished putting a stroker kit on his V6 mustang. My friend has dumped a bunch of money into this car, he has put cobra body mouldings and decals inside and out. He has upgraded brakes on it and spends a meticulous amount of time making it look good.

The car had a stock block, which has been bored and stroked and now makes around 300-310 whp. He even has gears for it. I am going on a cruise with him this weekend along with a bunch of buddies and will probably get a chance to run him. How badly do you think he will beat me?? I have a stock S4 with a gutted cat. We both have automatics.

Here is a video of him running open headers on the new build:

And his car:

If you had an X-pipe and everything on your S4 running as it should, you should be pretty even with him. With just a gutted cat, he will probably slowly walk you if he really has ~300whp. What kind/size tires does he have? He may beat you harder from a complete stop.

Why would anybody stroke a Ford V6?

other than a dead-start, close enough to be fun...make sure he never gets a jump on you and you may be surprised - especially at speed

Should be about an even race. I can't believe someone took the time to stroke a V6... shakes head...

Dude, I asked a very similar question when a buddy of mine in college spent $6,000 to supercharge his V6 Mustang. On top of that, it was no faster than the 928, and my car had only one knock sensor working at the time.

He must REALLY like that car. It would have been MUCH cheaper to have just bought a GT and supercharged/turbocharged it. Better yet, an early 4.6 Cobra.

I hate it when people fake up their mustang. If you want to stroke a v6 Rhys your choice but it still isn't a cobra.

I raced a v6 with a supercharger a few years ago in my mustang. The v6 with superchrger was horrible of the line. I thought the guy had blown his engine when he took off. It had decent upper end power once it got going but I had 5 car lengths on him by that time and had stopped accelerating because I thought he had given up.

Having said all that I have nobodea what a stroked v6 will do.

Insurance rates is one reason.

My old roomate hopped up a V6 Camaro because of the insurance difference between the V6 & V8.

^^^You are right, I didn't even think about that. My insurance rate for my first 928 when I was 16-17 was pretty minimal actually. Though, if it was a Mustang or Camaro it would have been HUGE.

Now being past 25 my current 928 is pretty cheap to insure with our other Porsche. Cheaper than my last Corvette by a good little bit, and that was even pretty cheap.

Stroking and modifying the old 3.8L V6 is a bit like taking a goldfish to the vet. It is probably cheaper and easier to swap engines especially when there is a wide range of V8s (4.6 SOHC, 4.6 DOHC, 4.6 DOHC Supercharged, 5.4 SOHC, 5.0 OHV, 5.8 OHV to name a few) that fit into SN95 Mustangs like this one with little or no modification.

In any case, the car does look very nice and I like the dark green color but I do wonder if he could have had a real Cobra for what he has in the car. Even if it is not your cup of tea, (I personally like Mustangs) you have to respect the passion and work that went into it.

In terms of the original question: you are running 2.20 gears and the 3.8 is a low end motor so he would probably get you on the low end (if he really has 300 hp) but you would start to pull him pretty quickly.

I believe my S4 is a pretty strong running example. He told me it was cheaper to stroke the stang then swap a V8 into it. He has put over 10K into the car not counting the purchase price, but he has done all the work on the car himself. His dad owns several extremely nice cars and they do a good job with their work.

Here is the block. He has powdercoated it and cleaned everything up real nice.

He has a na six so I think you will be fine. Not sure of his weight. Get him to go over 125mph and he will be as loose as a goose and could NEVER hang with you in to top end run. V6 suspension.

I had a Thunderbird SC with a blown six. Very strong runner. A lot of newbies on the forum would talk about dropping in a 5.0 which would end up slower than a SC. Guy's there are running 11sec 1/4 mile et's. You wouldn't want to play with one that has been modded as they can go! The top runner is in the high 9's with a 3.8 and a MPX blower and everything else!

Awesome car buy the way. Kinda a cult car like the 928. I will have another one day. Wanted to compound boost it with a rear turbo and a blow thru maf. Problem was it got stolen!

Just another example of how illogical and irrational people can be about cars.....you may love a car but it is not going to love you back...no matter how much you spend on it That was probably the euro 4.0 V-6 with the weird rear camdrive.....the new V-6 Mustang is 300hp bone stock but it a smaller higher RPM engine.
