Default Whats my S4 worth?

I'm trying to get an idea of what I should ask for my 89 S4, Auto, black on black, with sunroof and rear A/C, original 17" cup wheels.

I'm thinking of buying a sailboat so either this or the Jag XJ8 has to go.

The good :
  • Drives great with no issues, no overheating, shifts well, stops great, etc.
  • I had a Porsche specialist do an inspection on it, and they replaced the timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump, valley pan gasket, engine mounts, and top cover gaskets. Cost $4.5K. They also checked crankshaft endfloat (5 thou) and torque tube adjustment.
  • 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S
  • New brake pads all round, with correct wear sensors
  • New OEM radiator
  • New OEM ignition leads
  • Body good, has original paint
  • All climate control functions work : A/C, heat, direction etc. Wow!
  • Nice interior. Leather covers on dash and pod (cracks underneath repaired with epoxy)
  • Nice stereo : 2 amps in spare wheel well with 12" subwoofer
  • Has GTS mirrors and rear bumper
The bad :
  • Not much service history documentation before PO, who had it for couple of years and only spent 2K on servicing
  • Rear bumper cover has small dent by one of the rubber pads. Checked that the bumper shocks are OK so it's only the cover affected.
  • The original paint has a couple of spots on the fenders (3"?) where it's very thin so it looks brown where the primer is showing through the black paint
  • Rear tailgate release doesn't work
  • Rear wiper doesn't work
  • (everything else does work)

funny combination.. I have an xj8 and a 928.. along with a 30' sailboat... lol

just for reference... I just bought an 87 with pristine maintenance records, complete intake, fuel and vacuum R&R..good paint (one bad spot of clearcoat on the rear hatch).. decent interior.. for $7k.

What is your mileage? That will determine price quite a bit.....the market for "fun" cars is quite soft right now.....but I would say $7k is on the low side.....around $10k is probably the high side.....

Interesting - I'm looking at a 30' sailboat too. Is yours a Catalina?

Looking at how much you spent on it for service alone, you will be really upside down if you sell it.

my mileage was about the same, 141K..

my boat is a 1966 sagitta 30. It is a semi-custom dutch boat.. there were only 40 made, i have hull number 26... great, fast boat...(for a sailboat)..

Catalinas are awesome I have two friends with catalina 30's...
make SURE YOU GET A SURVEY... they have a few issues that can develop that are very costly.. the main one is the "catalina smile" that develops from the plywood udes in the hull where the keel bolts on degrading and compressing.. the keel drops slightly and the front and read separate from the seal on the hull... BIG bucks to repair..

Alos make sure it does not have the atomic 4 still installed... make sure that you get one with a diesel, as the atomic 4 are very problem prone. Easy to repair, but very finicky.... also gas on a boat is much more dangerous than diesel..

Ok... back to the 928...(sorry guys)..

sell the xj8, they are electrical nightmares waiting to happen... also they have secondary timing chain tensioner issues, and transmission drums that split apart..(although my wife LOVES hers)

I just looked at a Catalina 30 this afternoon... nice boat, new diesel, but superstructure looked old.. kind of stained. So I'll keep looking.

Enjoy your 928 all summer long, then sell and buy the boat in the fall when prices drop.

yea, but then you cannot boat THIS summer....

not to get off topic again, but it is well worth spending the money on a survey... even more important than a ppi with a 928...
A survey can save you a lot of headaches, and a TON of cash... (humm sounds surprisingly like a ppi for a 928).

mid 80's and up are really good boats... look at it out of the water and check the keel joint.. the number one problem with the catalinas... PM me if you have any Q's

Sports car prices tend to drop in the fall as well; although, maybe not in California.

You know what they say about the two happiest days of boat owners?

First is the day they get it.
Second is the day they get RID OF it...

Well I paid $14K for my S4 recently with 133K miles, though she is a real beauty sporting an awe-inspiring $$$$ repaint. It was just appraised for $15,200 using multiple comps in California and Nevada, so in this area, $10K would be just giving it away. But it does depend somewhat on the "wow" factor of the overall appearance. If you are talking about paint issues, then that could spell a significantly lower price point. But your maintenance and functionality seem very good, I'd say still way over $10K given what I saw buying mine in November.

Here's another data point. I saw an 89 with GTS mirrors and wheels down in Studio City. 70K miles, immaculate interior and rebuilt trans, but the same sorts of paint issues with original paint (it is just getting too old these days you know?) and the same broken stuff on the rear hatch as you describe. Ask price was $16K, I negotiated it to $14,500 but passed in favor of the one I bought. I paid for way more miles but a far nicer exterior, plus a few nice upgrades on mine like cup II wheels and Porken stuff.

If I were you I would ask $13K and negotiate.

Good luck,

Sean
