Where do these dash wires connect? Anyone?? :)

Just pulled the dash on my '84 euro in order to clean contacts for a non-working tach. and found these two ground wires just swinging in the breeze. Anyone know where they should be connected to? They have very small female connectors for a spade.
Also, I'm going to be putting in LED's. How can I find out which way (polarity wise) to put the 3 main instrument lights into the dash. I did a search and all that I found was that they need to be put in correctly, not how to tell if they are in correctly, until you plug in the dash and try them. I don't want to fry anything.
Thanks

Brown/white stripe is usually part of the interior light circuit - the switched ground between the light unit and the switches. Can't see the other wire - if it is solid brown, it is a ground wire. Could be the switched ground and solid ground for a missing footwell light.

Great call Wally!
The wire to the right is solid brown. I didn't even know that there was a footwell light on this car. So there has been a switched hot just hanging free waiting to touch the bare metal intrument cluster support. Where would this footwell light go, as I obviously have nothing there![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Also, do you have any insight into the LED question?
Thanks again

These are ground (brown) and switched ground (Brown/White) connections - there is no power here to worry about...
It is most likely the wiring for the Odometer reset switch (euro variety). It is usually taped up in cloth tape (factory standard) & was likely unwrapped at some point by a curious PO, there is likely also a pod switch connector for the rear fog switch similarly taped up (single loom for ROW/Euro & USA). ROW/Euro cars have an ODO reset switch below the pod since they are equipped with a rear fog light switch placed where the ODO reset is on USA cars.
There is no light in the dash/pod area (only the door on DS) so that is unlikely... The variable dash illumination is on the power not ground side so would not be Brown or Brown/White wires (would be typically Black & Black/Blue)

On my car the brown and white/brown wires are just taped up. I think they may have been for the ODO reset switch on earlier cars when it was located like the intensive wash switch but on the left side of the pod?

Ok guys, thanks ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I'll go ahaead and tape them up. And yes, your right there is also a pod switch connector that is also taped up inside the dash on the left.
I've been looking at the wiring diagrams on the Moorhouse CD's, but don't see any that show the colors of the wires. Is there a place that I'm missing that has the colors or a code for the colors of the wires so that it would be easier to trace them?
Thanks in advance

Nuc,
One of the joys of owning the 1984 Euro (or any 1984 928, for that matter) is looking at the wiring diagrams and realizing that Porsche screwed up and made the wiring diagrams without designating wire colors.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I usually use the '83 diagrams for the wiring, but the '85 diagrams for the central fuse panel area. They are not exact, but they'll get you close.

I have the same wires and they are for the ODO reset switch. In the 928 the wires for the ODO reset switch are made in double :
- 1 couple of wires (brown + brown/white) is for a little ODO switch under the POD Dash (=> for EURO 928)
- 1 couple of wires (also brown + brown/white) is for a big ODO switch in the front of the dash POD (=> for US 928)
This was because US cars do not have a rear foglight, so the rear fog light switch is replaced by a big reset ODO switch.
For euro cars there is a rear foglight switch and the reset ODO switch is a small switch located under the POD dash at the left bottom.

I have just put Leds in my 83 dash, and tested but not re-installed yet - waiting on ignition switch. On advice I found on one connector hood a black/blue wire and a brown at one end of the connector. follow the traces that come from these two and you will find they go to the light sockets - the blac/blue being +ve, the brown being ground. With the instrument panel face down on the bench, top towards you, I found the right hand light +ve on its right side, the other two +ve on the left side of the sockets. Check yours, YMMV. Note that some LEDs come with the input wires wound over the bottom of the wedge, which in our pod sockets will produce a SHORT - check your LEDs, and ensure you correct this condition if present! Locate the +ve side of the LED with a test battery, install, and test by connecting your test battery to the relevant connectors on the PCB edge. I also found these light fittings difficult to refit properly, and had to use needle nose pliers in the crescent shaped slots on the back to get them seated fully.
