shifter help please car in shop can't figure it out ?

Default shifter help please car in shop can't figure it out ?

ok so I took my 82 928 to the shop to have the fluid changed and the shifter adjusted as it was poping outta 1st and not letting me have 5th after a week they are still having a issue with it .. if its on the lift everything works great but it will not do it on the ground ? ? please help as everything looks fine ..?? it is adjusted right

From what I recall there is no adjustment as such, I believe there is a plastic cup at the front that fails, rather than wears, beyond that it is a very simple system.

Very strange and concerning that it works on the lift but not on the ground, this would indicate a much more serious issue.

Check the clamp bolt at the rear.

The rear coupler may be adjusted.

Chances are the front ball cup is a goner and the bushings in the rear coupler are in pieces. Have them ensure the condition of those before they start charging you for stuff you don't need.

do you know the part #s for those parts ? ? It would be a world of help I'll just have them replaced while they got the car I'm sure they are the ones from the factory on there ..

Rear coupler - 928 424 029 00

Ball cup -Don't have the number handy. I'd call Roger at www.928sRus.com and he would know for sure. He's got the coupler in stock too.

As has already been suggested, it's likely that the front ball cup and the rear coupler are sloppy and that's why you're getting the symptoms.

Replacing the bushes in the rear coupler and the front ball cup are definitely the first steps you should take to resolve the problem, and if they haven't been touched before, they're probably in bad shape. The rear coupler can be adjusted with a clamping collar on the selector rod that goes forward to the shifter, to ensure the shifter is centered, and needs to be checked for tightness on the selector shaft going into the gear box.

The items are cheap, but a bit difficult to get to, which is why they get ignored.

Do a search on both and you'll come up with threads that explain the replacement procedure ... or ask more questions here. I can post some pics if needed.

What kind of shop are you having work on your 928 that you need to show them pictures of what they need to fix?

One other failure mode I've heard of in these transmissions is metal powder (from gear and clutch wear, I'd guess) building up in the ends of the holes where the shift fork rods run, limiting them from moving fully back or forwards. I appologize if I don't have all the details straight; I have not seen this first hand, just had it related to me by my mechanic, who knows 928's quite well and has worked on them for a long time.

FWIW (and this I do have first hand knowledge on), the rear coupler can be visually inspected pretty easily, especially if the car's on a lift. You just need to pull back the rubber boot that covers it. The coupler is above the torque tube where it connects to the transmission. There's a decent amount of room around it to be able to see the condition of the bushings.

The rubber boot that goes over the rear coupler should be ordered as well. If the coupler is trashed, the boot probably is too.

+1 on greg's advice. Post your location and a 928 experienced guy can take a look.

Use some care, I had to drop the transmission to replace mine because it was frozen to the shifter input shaft.

I'm in Cincinnati Ohio . the car was @ eurofixx a small shop here in town after being at 2 ( Porsche ) shops and them looking at the car and shaking there heads saying they don't know anything about 928's I took it there .... they are the ones who fixed the no bleed problem that the other shops could not do in a month they had it done in 1 day .. but they also are not 928 guys. they build high strung vw's and audi's

I picked the car up today still shifting the same but had all new brakes and the fluids changed for $80.00 bucks ( I supplied the parts and fluids ) ...

As suggested above. I had the same issue's when I bought my car. Scared me half to death as I was thinking tranny maybe clutch. It is a simple fix if I could do it. My rear coupling was so loose it was about to fall off.
