That's excellent news.

Other countries use sugarcane which produces far more ethanol per acre than corn. Common switchgrass and even hemp are better sources for ethanol than corn. Pretty much anything would be a better source......which begs the question: "why is the US primarily using corn to produce e85?" Go ask the congressmen from Iowa....

Melbourne sites vie for waste-fed biofuel plant
Barry Park
October 11, 2010
BIOFUELS company Coskata plans to name a Melbourne-based site for its $400 million waste-to-ethanol plant within the next few months.

Wes Bolsen, chief marketing officer of the US-based company that has attracted business partners including car maker GM Holden and the Victorian government, told BusinessDay he expected five potential sites to be whittled down to three within days, with a single site nominated by January.

Mr Bolsen is in Victoria to meet government and a group of companies that are helping the Illinois-based biofuel producer set up a fuel factory that can convert waste products as diverse as household food scraps and old tyres into cheap ethanol that can then be mixed with petrol and used in cars.

The Coskata plant proposed for Melbourne should be able to produce about 250 million litres of ethanol a year from the system, which Mr Bolsen said would help reduce the country's dependence on mineral oils.

Holden has become the first car maker to offer a vehicle that can run on anything from 100 per cent petrol to E85, a mix of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol.

Mr Bolsen said ''major community engagement'' would help determine which of the five sites would be the most appropriate.

''These communities are competing for jobs and growth,'' Mr Bolsen said. ''We're looking for a site around the Melbourne area, and we've already had interest from NSW and Queensland.''

Mr Bolsen said the Victorian biofuel plant would take up to three years to build, creating hundreds of construction jobs and ongoing employment from a waste collection process that will source feedstock for the plant within a 50-kilometre radius.

Mr Bolsen said sourcing waste material was proving an easy process, with companies already lining up to offer Coskata waste products to feed into the plant.

He said this waste would normally cost up to $150 a tonne to dispose of and that it would mostly end up as landfill.
The partners are listed below but it appears to be US technology. It also helps get rid of rubbish which is good.

Victoria signs on to bio-ethanol plant with Coskata
23 March 2010

Victoria may have found a new, sustainable use for its garbage and building waste, with a $400 million biofuel plant capable of turning rubbish into ethanol likely to be built in Melbourne.

US renewable energy company Coskata has joined forces with GM Holden, Caltex, Veolia, Mitsui and the Victorian Government to conduct further investigation into building a plant capable of producing 200 million litres of ethanol a year.

Hi Greg

I run my twin turbo '79 5 spd on LPG. I ended up puting the gas tank behind the rear seats, it is a modest sized tank, but the car was wonderfully cheap to run N/A, It doesn't go very far on a tankfull when using boost tho. The tank does sit over the spare wheel well however, so that was deleted and replaced with a can of Zoosh. I use a stone old Impco system on my car but a new school electronic system would be the go, Is the subsidy still in place? The govt. payed for my entire system!

Cheers Roy

Roy that is interesting, one idea I had was a donut tank where the petrol tank is with a smaller petrol tank below the gas tank. The modern systems start on petrol then switch to LPG after 30 seconds. That donut tank would be a usable 42 litres.

The subsidy is still in place but only $1,500 now, it was $2,000 when petrol was at its dearest, around $1.70 to $1.80 a litre. Our system was close to $5K before rebate of $1750.00, we have a usable 84 litre tank.

Cheers

Greg

This is my LPG solution. The best mod is a little fuel tank, maybe 20 l and a new flour in the back with a 80 l wheel like tank.
My tank is 80 l big so you can use 80 % = ~65 l LPG.I can drive 400 km nonstop.

Karsten, how well does it go? Would it do better with more comp? Apparently every country has a different blend of LPG. Some mixes are real good for knock resistance while others have greater calorific values.

Greg,
I need 10 % more LPG than gas and high speed with LPG is ~252 km/h and with gas 260 km/h.
The summer blend here is 80 propan 20 buthan.
Winter 60/40.
knock resistance is very high, between 105-110 Oktan.

Hi. I have been lurking here as I am contemplating a 928 in the future and picking up some info. Seems like a active group of folks and some of the ongoing projects are quite impressive.

I have read that gas prices are expected (by some experts) to average $3 gallon for 2011. The current oil prices do not reflect current stockpiles but events in the middle east. That would indicate our prices will drop later this year. Hopefully the Libya civil war ends soon.

There is quite a bit of oil left although it is getting harder to extract. Prices will reflect that and thus we will start to use other sources. Coal to liquids could be used as Germany did in WWII but it is very CO2 releasing. There are huge amounts of coal left. I have a small research project that converts CO2 and H2O to CO and H2 (syn gas) which can be converted to methanol and further to gasoline. It takes electricity which could be supplied by windmills or solar. Way to early to speculate on cost. Carbon is such a great carrier of hydrogen and we have invested so much on developing technology around it. I doubt we get away from it anytime soon.

The point about gas mileage and distance traveled is very important in this argument. If you only drive less than 2K miles per year in your 928 your not going to feel the effect of $5 gas much. Except perhaps psychologically.
