Hi everyone, I'm a long time visitor of this great site and I need some advice.
I have a very well cared for and fully documented 82 that I have decided to sell. Which sites do you guys visit the most to find 928's or Porsche's, in general, for sale? Do the classifieds work well on Rennlist? I'm in Toronto, Canada.

I have the car up on the free sites like Kijiji, Craigslist etc., but I'm receiving a lot of scam inquiries. Should this activity be expected when selling a 928? I have had some good interest in the car so far, but it's sometimes difficult to separate the junk from legit prospective buyers.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

It should be expected when you are selling ANYTHING on those sites...

I would think Craigslist will hit the most folks, ebay would also be a good choice for max exposure.

I found both my last 928s on cars.com. These sites contained less BS than eBay and AutoTrader at the time.

Expect scams and possibly "dealers" or consignment sales folks along your way.

I've looked at, over the years and in no particular order
1) PCA.org -both national site and local region sites
2) Autotrader
3) Cars.com
4) Pelican parts
5) Rennlist
6) Craigslist
7) Local paper
8) Word of mouth

imho, each site brings its own type of buyer. PCA/RL/Pelican are all seeminglt aware enthusiasts. The others vary in intensity, knowledge and interest. I bought my SC by word of mouth.. Sold my Boxster on Craigslist to someone who "just wanted a pretty convertible" and sold others to fans of the model on the marque specific sites.

my experience is that making someone "call" to learn more does a good job of weeding out the true tire kickers (but no, it doesn't eliminate them all)... and in a perverse way, it makes you understand the hassles legitimate car salesmen must go through everyday !

I have sold the past 9 sports cars that I have owned over the last 7 years via EBAY. I use it more as a marketing tool and I either end the auction early with a deposit, or they sold after the auction was over with reserve not met. The buyers would contact me and then negotiate. I just sold my 993tt 2 weeks ago. I has an offer within the first 2 hours of placing the auction. I sat on it for a night and completed the transaction the following morning. With EBAY, you are marketing to a worldwide audience for @$20 with 24 supersize pictures. People that view your car have to be looking for that specific type of car. If it doesn't sell, you relist it for free.

In the Toronto area specifically I would recommend Autotrader.ca; you can make a post that covers the Toronto area and buyers from across Canada can view it. I've had very good luck with that over the years - probably bought/sold more than a dozen cars.

Craigslist and Kijiji have very high levels of low ballers etc. That said I bought my 928 thru Craigslist because the seller got so frustrated with spam inquiries - so it is a good place for buyers, not sellers - at least in Toronto. I suspect there are regional and country differences that are reflected in the comments of others in this thread.

Given the relative proportion of cars in the US versus Canada (1/10th the population and a even lower proportion of high end or classic cars), eBay can be more frustrating for a local buyer. There are 6 928s currently for sale in Ontario and 5 in the rest of Canada on Autotrader.ca

Cars.com is tied to a Zip code - so it doesn't work in Canada where we have a postal code.

Take some good photos write a factual description and list it on E-bay with a reserve, that is a very real check on what the market thinks the car is worth .... generally speaking unless it is a very low miles very original 928 your "best" buyer is going to be someone who has always wanted a 928 and knows little about them.

Hopefully, I'm not out of line, but I recently posted it here http://www.excellence-mag.com/classifieds/2678 for those that might be interested. I'd sure feel better selling it to a rennlister who would give the car a good home. I'll look into posting it in the classifieds here as well.

If a 1988 with only 74,000 miles sits unsold for less than $11,000 I doubt that your car is going anywhere at nearly $10,000 considering the miles. And yes to advertise a car for sale one needs to be a member.

Your car looks very clean and is nicely presented. I don't think this model year is made for regular gas, though. It would worry me a bit, knowing that it ran for a long time on the wrong grade of gas.

Like James said, the price is a bit high - or is this in Canadian Dollars?

The price is in Canadian dollars and is negotiable. No worries about the engine, it's a US 4.5, low compression and has never had any problems. I put premium 94 in it once a month, just in case. It never pings, never smokes. Heck, I even have the original cat converter and muffler in great condition on the car.

Good point about the S4 Jim. How would you price my car? It's not a loaded question and I won't be offended.
