That's true, but the thread doesn't suck without them. JF

We did one Friday, changed the rivets out for bolts on the rear flex plate, I can post a picture of it tomorrow if that will help.

had to reuse my old converter.the new unit is an 88. i did not get the tc cover with the new unit so found out the 87 tc cover and 88 converter are not compatable.converter and drive flange is different .hope the old converter is still good after the bearing failure.

Not seeing a difference in PET for 87 vs 88 TC's or covers.

I understand you don't have the camera capability today, but maybe some subcomponent part numbers could be helpful.

Transmission ID numbers, on bottom of both old and new, would also be good to confirm which MY boxes you have. Good start at least.

These appear to be good part numbers 87-91 for A28 12/14/16 transmissions
from PET:

960 321 101 03 ---Housing cover
722 250 060 2 ---TC (variant of MB part number I guess)
960 116 042 02 ---Drive plate

FYI, last time I priced a TC it was about $125 for a rebuilt unit + core.

The earlier 83-86 4 speeds had covers and TC that were not compatible with the later S4.

OK. This was the car you pulled off the bank repo lot. Mechanically pretty rough, IIRC.

No telling how it might have been cobbled-up.

Please fix it right, using the parts designed for it.

Installing a plate as you indicated is dangerous beyond belief.

If you were to flip it, as was your original ( 8 months ago ) concept of the "growing value" of the 928, you risk the lives of the little kids that might ride in that back seat.

Fix it right or sell it.

somthing is not matching up then.the trans that came out was not the original.had writing on it which indicates a junkyard unit.the tc are very different, the one that came out of the car is much bigger but the center cap that fits into input shaft is taller on the 88 tc.which is why there is a gap.

So, take a pad and pencil and make a table of part numbers.
Hard to help you without that.

Its possible somebody put an early transmission in the car.
Neither the cover, nor the TC, will fit an S4 transmission if they come from a pre-S4 4 speed trans.

Here is the contrast of an early and late cover.

The early cover has the ribs, the late cover is smooth (S4)

Does your cover (from the trans that was in the car) look like either of these?

Could you provide the transmission id #s from the stampings under the old and new cases?
Also, any numbers and markings on the old and new TC's?
