iirc they did on the later boxes.

i had my mechanic weld on a hex bolt and then just unsrewed it, and then replaced the plug. it sould come out pretty easily.

'86.5-up have a plug w/washer. They also added a plug on the bottom of the auto differential case. (Can't reach the lower plug w/dual exhaust.)

That's interesting that they seemed to have recognised that there was a problem with the gearbox plugs and yet they were already using the solution (a plug/washer) on the sump.

Makes you wonder what the thinking was behind using taper plugs on gear boxes in the first place.
