you could with mine. it shifted perfectly before, with absolutely no issues, so if it would work this way on reassembly, i would be just fine with that. the more I look at the parts, the more I think just the 5th gear and mating gear are bad
But, on a scale of 1 to 10, what is the difficulty level of taking apart a transmission on a bench? (5 being a timing belt change)

The real issue is not how hard it is to take the transmission apart, or put back together (though that would certainly be an issue for me, as well), it's looking at the disassembled pieces and knowing what is 'good' to put back, and what needs to be replaced. That's the challenge. I can look at the surface of a new synchro and the surface of a used synchro, and tell the difference, but I can't tell you whether the used synchro is any good or whether it's done.

I still have the broken 5th Gear transmission that really shifted nicely. im sure , it just needs a 5th gear set and maybe while we are in there, replace 3-4th synchros. however, it wont be me that rebuilds this, maybe greg brown? hate to see this transmission just be stuffed in a shed.
anyone know where there can be a used 5th gear for an S4 transmission to be found? Ive heard here are new ones available, but they are $1500 each .
what would the minimum cost be to replace the 5th gear , assuming nothing else needs replacing?
