With the amount of torque I had to use to get the *%$*^%# bolt out of there, I'd think my car would have pogo'd across the shop before the pulleys were an issue........

Some stuff on top of the engine that would bend the hood if it's closed? Then hang a big honkin' sign off the front of the hood where it can't be missed. Mechanical interlocks are even better, if you can fab something up in a reasonable period of time.

Something wired to the car or for some other reason, shouldn't start or move the car? Big note on windshield that can't be missed. Or painter's tape over where the key goes into the ignition.

It's probably saved my butt a few times, and if nothing else, it gives me peace of mind. It's even more important if you work on your car on and off and might forget where you left off.
I write info on post-it notes and then take pictures of the notes for future reference.
Somewhat funny story, My wife asked about all the post-its and pictures I had stuck the car while doing my TB/WP job. I told her I didn't want forget where everything goes, she laughed and said I was getting old.
Later that night I finish up and go into the bathroom to find two pictures on the mirror and the word "Reminder" above them.

One picture is of my wife a$$ with "not here" written on it, the other was the front of her with the word "HERE" written.

So... did that give you an idea for two tattoos she might consider getting? (remember: the notes have to be optimally placed considering where and when they're most needed!)

Very true. I'm going to hope/guess that everyone's profession has something like this...

Heh, I even had one mechanic run a 9201 belt tensioning tool around the cam gear....that wasn't pretty!

Somehow I think that would have bothered me a bit.

Damn Brian, you would have to include your wife in that story. Had it been an ex-girlfriend we would have come up with enough funny comments to make this a 20 page thread. I know I can't use any of mine.

Go for it Charley, I would be disappointed in you if you didn't.

That's the problem with car keys, there always the last place you look.

Brian has been checking those notes daily for the last six months, but they're still attached to the same corresponding pictures. Hope springs eternal.

I will admit that while replacing the clutch assembly on the Schwartz, I misremembered where I put the original bolts and picked up an equal number of the wrong length bolts. The engine turned over about one eighth of a revolution before it stopped dead in it's tracks. Took me a few minutes to figure out what had happened and find the original bolts.

I "lost" a deep impact 19mm somewhere on the driver side of the crossmember. Drove to SITM that year and found it after I got back. Safe and sound.

Second purpose for the belly pans-- they catch stuff you'd really like to make it to the floor.

Oh lot's of these, and I also leave big notes on windscreen ("rear wheel chocked", "no oil do not start" that kind of thing).

Most recent was shorting out power at the jump post via multimeter lead when I clipped the wrong lead to ground. The thing just vaporised in a puff of smoke, and has left a neat imprint of thin cable burnt into top of RHS intake tube. Sort of 928 version of tattooed reminder to double check things. Was lucky it was a thin cable so it acted like fuse wire - anything thicker could have been disastrous.

almost kill myselve. it was not on the porsche,,,
put car high on woodenbloks,
removed torqtube,
trying to remove a large bolt in the differential.
no handbrake,
started wrenching on the bolt and,,,,
car runs off the blocks dropped with the diferentialhouse on the jack who was riding along backwards with the car .
i just discoverd how little fors was needed to the pinionshaft to drive the car by hand.

almost crusched like an inseckt . the jack who was still high accidently picked up the dif house and saved me. it should be goldplated and diserves a place in the livingroom.

that day i stopped wrenching on my car for a while

a friend of mine filled gastank with gasoline,,but it was a diesel,,,white smoke everywhere,,

I'll bet you could break the rear axle nuts loose by putting on a breaker and then moving the car with the breaker handle on the ground. My Dad told me once that they used that method on older VW Beetles.

Quick Reply: anybody admit to leaving breaker bar on crank bolt then cranking engine?
